No Signal After Turning on TV and AVR
Hey all,
Since I just rebuilt my HTPC with W7 x64 I seem to be having an issue. When I turn on my AVR and TV it should display what's on my HTPC (WMC). However lately about 50% of the time I just get my TV saying "no signal" and I have to shut down the computer. Tapping the keyboard, mouse or remotes do not get the signal back and I have to reboot the machine.
All the sleep / hibernate functions to my knowledge are disabled and the monitor is set to always on.
Before I reinstalled W7 as 64bit this would happen occasionally but not enough to be a bother.
Any ideas?

ITGuy1024,
I had an issue where my television was losing the EDID and it would just come up with a muted green screen even when the HTPC was running along happily after powering off the television or switching sources to my Amazon Fire Stick. My HTPC is located behind my television, is HDMI into my receiver, and my receiver is HDMI up to my television. Next time you get the no signal, try unplugging the HDMI cable from your HTPC (if it is convenient/relevant) and then plugging it back in. This forces the tv to see the 'new' EDID. If it is the same issue the television will start showing what you expect it to. After that we can direct you to all the forum posts for the HDMI Detective and other work arounds defined here or I can detail my experience.
Thanks,
Ed

Does your AVR have an OSD menu?
When this happens, can you bring up that menu on the tv?
Can you change the AVR Input Source and see the other sources on the tv?
Then switch back to PC, what happens?

One workaround would be to purchase a cheap HDMI splitter fed between TV and AVR. The TV will retain an always on lock this way.

The AVR does have an OSD but I didn't think to try and bring that up when this happens.tzr916 wrote:Does your AVR have an OSD menu?

If I switch between input devices and back to the HTPC it still says no signal.

Is the TV saying there is "no signal"? (to simulate- get a picture, leave the tv on, pull the hdmi cable out from the back of the tv)
Or is the AVR saying there is "no signal"? (to simulate- get a picture, leave the tv on, pull the hdmi cable out from the PC INPUT on the AVR)
Notice the difference?
Next the problem happens, check for AVR osd menu, what does the AVR info screen or front panel say about the input picture signal format?

The tv say no signal.
The AVR screen shows the correct input on while the TV says no signal.

If you can't bring up the AVR osd when the tv says "no signal" then this has nothing to do with the pc. You have a failing hdmi board in your AVR or failing hdmi port on your tv. Try updating firmware on both and factory reset on both.

I wasn't able to bring up the OSD on the AVR when the TV says no signal. Coincidence that this is happening more often the same time I updated the HTPC?
I did find a sleep setting on the AVR that was set to 30 minutes, I disabled that. Maybe that will help.
I'll try moving the HDMI cable to different ports on the TV and AVR.

Your AVR should always output a signal, when it's on. You should at least get black screen and osd from the AVR. Doesn't have anything to do with the AVR inputs.ITGuy1024 wrote:I wasn't able to bring up the OSD on the AVR when the TV says no signal.

I agree. Figured it would be worth trying. If the AVR board is failing I don't understand why rebooting the computer makes the signal come back and switching between input sources doesn't.

Doesn't make sense-
Assume you leave the pc on always, no sleep mode.
Power on tv and avr.
Tv says "no signal" error message on the screen and you can't bring up the avr osd.
You don't touch the tv or the avr.
You reboot the pc and suddenly the "no signal" on the tv goes away??
Curious how you are rebooting the pc? just hard reset on power button? or ?
What model is your avr?
Have you updated firmware tv & avr?

I guess it's possible the PC is changing resolution to something the AVR can pass through but the tv does not accept-
shut off avr/tv.
pc sees the hdmi drop and changes resolution to 800x600.
next time you turn on the avr/tv, the avr is passing the 800x600 signal out it's hdmi port.
the tv doesn't sync to 800x600 on hdmi and says "no signal" on the screen.
Suggestion-
Set up remote desktop to the PC (I use chrome remote desktop).
Next time it happens, remote into the pc and check the resolution.

A cheap powered HDMI switch from Monoprice plugged into the TV HDMI then to the AVR will fix this once and for all. You just leave it set to the same output and forget about it.
About 20+ bucks.
No need for anything like an expensive Gefen HDMI Detective. The switch acts as always on retaining part of the HDMI link to the TV no matter what sequence you turn things on further down the chain. Your TV will always fire up on the correct working input this way.

Hard reset or RDP to the HTPC and reboot.

I'll try this.STC wrote:A free solution may be to try HDMIYo and a button on your remote such as # mapped through event ghost to trigger it.
I'd still like to keep the discussion going for other possible solutions.
