Is it possible to run Windows Media Center in a Windows 8.1 32 bit environment?
If so, any potential pitfalls?

Of course.
Pitfalls:
- "Pro" pack with Media Center costs an extra $100 (by contrast, WMC is free in Win 7)
- No option to auto-start with windows (create shortcut in startup folder instead, if you can find it)
- Incompatible with all extenders except Xbox 360
- Win 8.1 sucks on many levels. Buying and using it only encourages Microsoft to do more of the same.
