can i access ceton content on two pcs?
Hi guys,
Thinking about going down the Ceton route, it will be installed in a HTPC in my living room and I wanted to check if I can access live and recorded content on that HTPC from another computer in my bedroom on 7MC? Is that possible?
Thanks

Live TV - yes if you share a tuner out to the remote PC.
Recorded from living room PC - only if the material recorded is DRM free.
This is a Microsoft restriction preventing other PC's on your network acting as full featured extenders.
If you find you are limited with DRM, consider an extender for the task.

Yep. I like the Linksys DMA2100 extenders. You should be able to find them on eBay etc. They have their quirks but are completely silent, and pretty cheap.

Extender is the way to go if you want reliable operation, and high WAF levels.
Extenders don't have to deal with DRM issues that are set by the broadcasters, and Microsoft has nothing to do with it. It is part of CableLabs certification.
We have had our Ceton for over a year now, and with 4 extenders (5 TV's in the house) WAF is very high.
The HTPC is on 24/7, and we turn on extenders as we need to use them. Plan ahead, as extenders do take time to boot up and sync up with the HTPC (1-2 minutes).
We use Linksys exclusively. A mix of DMA 2100 and DMA 2200's.

Maybe the Linksys units take 1-2 minutes, but XBoxen take 30 seconds or less to become completely active.

In part yes, but not really what I was trying to say.- Client PC's/laptops cannot be true extenders to a mother Media Center PC whether you have a cablecard device or not...blueiedgod wrote:...Microsoft has nothing to do with it. It is part of CableLabs certification.

I think what STC was referring to is Microsoft doesn't allow PCs to act as extenders. That's a Microsoft restriction, not a CableLabs restriction (CableLabs doesn't get involved in extenders...hence the reason no WMC extenders are CableLabs certified). Microsoft could easily update WMC to allow PCs to act as extenders, but they haven't...and there's a 99.9999999999999% chance they won't. They want you to buy the Xbox360, not another PC.

What I've never understood is, why would they want you to buy an XBox instead of another copy of Windows?
