Here, no hosts file modification, am not having a connection problem. I'd ask if you've checked proper Internet access on your MC box, but you probably shouldn't have gotten very far through TV Setup without it (check anyway).
Do you have the hosts file mods in place now, or removed? What mods did you use when you did the host file trick?
For most people I think, the issue was intermittent, and the update you finally run after several tries...

This fixed my problem, from answers.microsoft.com
Method 3: Rebuild Media Center data store and check:
i. Click on start
ii. In the search box type in cmd, right click on cmd and select “Run as administrator”
iii. Open a command prompt, and run the following command:
%systemroot%\ehome\mcupdate.exe -MediaCenterRecoveryTask
iv. Close command window, and reboot the computer.
Open Media center and check if that resolves the issue.
But it does involve setting up media center again from scratch.
