jasonl wrote:Appears to be a problem with one or more of the Akamai servers that host Microsoft's content. Exactly which server you get pointed at depends on your DNS server, which is why switching it sometimes works. But, since Google DNS is anycasted, using 8.8.8.8 will point to different physical servers depending on where you are in the world, and that may point you at different Akamai servers, including possibly pointing you right back at an inaccessible one.. Forcing WMC to use known-good servers by bypassing the DNS lookup appears to allow updates to complete, or at least did on both of my PCs that were having trouble. Open an elevated command prompt (search for cmd, right click, Run as Administrator) and run:

Code: Select all

notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Add the following lines at the bottom of the file:

Code: Select all

65.55.5.170 data.tvdownload.microsoft.com
2.16.216.176 cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com
*UPDATED SEPT 22*

Save the file, then at the command prompt run:

Code: Select all

ipconfig /flushdns
Then, force an update in WMC.

Once Microsoft and Akamai figure it out, you'll want to reopen the file using the same process, and remove those 2 lines and save the file. Otherwise, a future server update could break things for you again.
thank you! After hours of hunting and a 45m frustrating call with Comcast this fixed my issue.

So I've tried everything in this post twice and nothing works. I'm using MCE2005 - are there different dns entries for the XP version?

Sometimes it takes awhile. The first time I tried it it did not work. A forum Member by the name of "Space" said to wait awhile. That made the difference for me. I came back in two hours and the update worked, and the guide came back. Just out of curiosity what state are you located in? A lot of people including myself are in Colorado. Good luck.

This fix didn't solve my problem, I have the same problem that yours, but I live in France, and I tried yesterday around 10 at night, but didn't work, and try again this morning at 11 hours, but didn't work again, and my EPG is ending at 24/11/2014, and at this date "No data available".

Help me please.

However, sometime WMC said that the Update is ok, but the ending date of my EPG is the 24/11, and when I go to WMC settings -> TV -> Guide -> About Guide, the ending date is the 24/11/2014.

Sorry for my bad English, but I'm French.

I would not be surprised if MCE2005 uses different domain names, but I am not familiar with WMC on other than win7/8.

Sorry, I don't know much about how this works in other countries, but I would not be surprised if they also used different domain names for different countries. You should look at the event viewer to see if you see any errors for Windows Media Center. If it appears to be connecting without any errors, then there is probably some problem on the server and you should contact Microsoft.

Edited again - Everything works. New steps 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

Success!! Not an easy fix, but nonetheless it's working.
1. Installed MCE2002 on a different machine.
2. Set up the guide exactly how I did on my MCE2005 machine. Luckily the old version of MCE didn't check for a video card before setting up the guide.
3. Copied the eHome folder from \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft to a flash drive on the MCE2002 computer
4. Stopped all services related to Media Center on the MCE2005 computer. (Control Panel>>Administrative Tools>>Services)
5. Renamed the eHome folder on the MCE2005 computer to eHomeOld (if it won't let you rename the folder - double check that you have stopped all processes in step four).
6. Copied and pasted the eHome folder from the MCE2002 to the MCE2005 target computer.
7. Restarted
8. Opened up the Media Center and it automatically downloaded the guide! (But the Live TV will probably be broken)
9. Stopped all services related to Media Center again on the MCE2005 computer
10. Renamed the ehshell.config in the eHome folder to ehshell.configOld
11. Copied the files ehshell.config, user.ird, and cache.ird from the eHomeOld folder (hopefully you did this in step 5!) and pasted them into the eHome folder.
12. Ran the Setup TV Signal (this time I selected the option for a different region, but selected mine from the list).
13. Success! So far... I'll be checking my extenders next.

This did erase all of my preferences (deleted channels I don't pay for and series recording settings) but now that I have the guide back, I can reset my series recordings and channels.

Also, before I tried this method I changed all of my DNS and Hosts file changes back to their original settings (no 8.8.8.8 in DNS or the extra entries in the Hosts file).

That would be great, but I'm running MCE2005 (Windows XP version of Media Center) - from their webpage they only support Vista and above.

After weeks of flawless updates using original hosts file, got:
9:14:54 AM - Failed to retrieve EpgListings (Error: Unable to connect to the remote server)
Reinstalled jasonl's 22 September hosts file fix and got a flawless update, Guide End Date: 1 Dec 2014. Seems like some kind of endless mean spirited joke.

Mine works still flawless ever since I put the modified hosts file and Google DNS. Not a single failure in between. That was on October 12th. Also the balloon popups started working again on their own.

You are very lucky, mine doesn't work. It is blocked to the 24/11, and I format my PC and reinstall Windows 8.1, but no changes. So, I think their server are bugged.

So I'm besides myself. In March I reloaded my Windows Media Center 2005 after a drive crashed.
I never ran any Windows XP patches because I only use the system for TV. MSFT has now turned off windows update and purged the downloads site of any usable xp files.

I had no issues with the EPG or MCE2005 until Oct 30th 2014 when the guide failed to download, but I had listings until Nov 17th so I didn't panic as I had gotten failure notices in the past years and the guide always managed to update before expiring. I was away over the 17th and came home to find a dead guide.
Here is what the event viewer said on Oct 30th and this loop of events went on for quite a few rounds before it gave up.

----------------------------------------------------

I have tried reinstalling the guide, all I ever get is "error 14" try again loop, but I have internet with no issues on the machine and in the house. The date and time are correct on the machine and it time syncs with a government time server.

I have tried manual guide downloads several times a day - I always get error 33.

I renamed the epg folder, still no update and I lost all my channel line up info so I restored it.

I put the September 22 fixes from this thread in the local hosts file, flushed my dns, stopped and started the dns cache service, and cold booted the unit and even threw salt over my shoulder and it is still not updating.

For the record I'm on Comcast Digital and using the former At&t Yahoo DSL now owned by Frontier as of mid November for my internet connection.

Am I chewed because I never ran Windows update to get roll-up 2 and October 2006 roll-ups, or does that have nothing to do with it?

Is there anyone using XP based WMC 2005 getting guides in the world let alone Connecticut if so with what DNS and what ip addresses in the host file.

Is there a set of command line switches for 2005 XP to clean up the database in case it is kaput?

Is it worth the risk to try to reset up the tv service or do I really risk loosing the ability to watch and manually record programming? I'm fearful of that generic error 14 and then loosing my current line up.

I hate windows 8 but I can get a copy of 7 but I've been told none of my library of shows and recording will play on the Windows7 version of WMC if they were recorded with MCE2005. Is that really true?

Sigh

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

I don't know why those shows shouldn't play in Win7 since you can't record protected content in XP so nothing should be locked to a local encryption key. But easy enough for you to check, just take one of your recordings and put it on a CD and find someone with a Win7 with Home Premium or above and copy the file to the RecordedTV folder and then open MC and go to recordedTV and the show should be there and you can play it. I think that XP recorded dvr-ms as did Vista and it wasn't until Win7 (or tv pack on Vista) that the format was changed to wtv. You can play back Vista recordings on Win7 and even cableCARD protected recordings as long as you upgraded Vista to Win7.

At this point I don't know what you can do about guide listing for XP and not have done the upgrades could be a problem at this point. Get a copy of Win7 Professional while you can and install the 64 bit version so you can use more memory in the future.

I am also in France and my EPGlisting.enc file is dated 9th November 2014 8:37 with there being no more guide after early tomorrow morning (24 Nov).

Is there someway one can get one of these EPGListing.enc files from another country?

I have found there is already an issue on the Connect.Microsoft.com site for this "French" EPG issue.

Anyone experiencing the problem, please go to here and add to "reproduced" so Microsoft knows it is widespread -> https://connect.microsoft.com/site1145/ ... ls/1037275
(sign in required but free)

J'ai deja trouvé que microsoft était informé sur le site connect.microsoft.com. Il faut venir est ajouter vos commentaire pour dire que c'est un probleme grave (lien au-dessus).
