I activated GuideTool so as to be able to backup my WMC settings, wish I had done so before doing all those re-installs of WMC/W7/W8. There are probably other ways of backing up and restoring the DB, but GuideTool was well worth the money.

I would recommend doing a backup, GerryM, if you happen to need to go down the re-do-setup route that was the only way I got my WMC working again. GuideTool is a gem.

What exactly is the guide tool and where do I buy it? My guide is completely blank and I see no errors. How would a "backup" help me? Is it a way of getting the guide restored and kick-started or will I always have to use this?

Here it is, http://1geek1tool.com/guidetool/

What I meant was, that if your guide *was* up-to-date at one stage in the distant past, and you put efforing into renaming/deleting/modifying channels, then you'll have to redo all of that if you reinstall WMC.

GuideTool will save you from that last bit - it will let you backup your work, then when you reinstall WMC, and you can use GuideTool to restore your original lineup. It won't fix your guide as such, re-doing your TV-signal setup or reinstalling WMC might achieve that (it was the only thing that got mine going). Apologies if I have misread your symptoms.

Which method are you using to update the guide?

WMC or CLI?

Prior to making the DNS change to automatic, it would at least give me an error that it couldn't connect to the server or something to that effect. Anyone else seeing a similar issue?
Do you see the following in your update:

2:05:25 AM - The Broadband package is already up to date.
2:05:25 AM - Retrieving EpgListings.
2:05:25 AM - Processing EpgListings.
2:05:26 AM - Retrieving EpgListing-2.enc.
2:05:33 AM - Extracting 189829057_ListingData.mxf.
2:05:34 AM - Processing 189829057_ListingData.mxf.
2:09:10 AM - Processing of EpgListings is complete.
2:09:10 AM - Retrieving EpgListings.
2:09:10 AM - Processing EpgListings.
2:09:10 AM - Retrieving EpgListing.enc.
2:09:31 AM - Extracting 28506897_ListingData.mxf.
2:09:35 AM - Processing 28506897_ListingData.mxf.
2:16:03 AM - Processing of EpgListings is complete.
2:17:39 AM - Update successful.
2:17:39 AM - Next update at 11/12/2014 3:20:05 AM.

Or do you see this in your update:
3:20:05 AM - The Directory package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The ClientUpdate package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The NetTV package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The MCESpotlight package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The MCEClientUX package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The SportsSchedule package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The SportsV2 package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The Broadband package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The NetworkMetadata package is not available.
3:20:05 AM - The EpgListings package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - The EpgListings package is already up to date.
3:20:05 AM - Testing internet connection.
3:20:19 AM - Connection established.
3:20:19 AM - Processing of MCEClientMaintenance is complete.
3:21:01 AM - Update successful.
3:21:01 AM - Next update at 11/12/2014 2:35:23 PM.

(The second example does not download or process the guide listings but runs the Maintenance program.)

If you don't see:
2:09:10 AM - Retrieving EpgListing.enc.
2:09:31 AM - Extracting 28506897_ListingData.mxf.
2:09:35 AM - Processing 28506897_ListingData.mxf.
2:16:03 AM - Processing of EpgListings is complete.

With the ID number matching your ID number in About Guide, then there is something wrong with tv set-up on that machine.

Still stuck here...I've tried both the CLI update, and the GUI update. Here's what I'm seeing:
7:01:30 PM - Retrieving EpgListings.
7:01:30 PM - Processing EpgListings.
7:01:30 PM - Retrieving EpgListing-2.enc.
7:01:37 PM - Extracting 189849700_ListingData.mxf.
7:01:37 PM - Processing 189849700_ListingData.mxf.
7:01:56 PM - Processing of EpgListings is complete.
7:02:16 PM - Errors during the last update.
7:02:16 PM - Will retry at 11/15/2014 12:29:36 AM.
Oddly, my guide shows local network broadcast channels, but none of the cable channels.
DNS:8.8.8.8, Comcast 80504 zip
Looks like I'm getting the listings, they're just bad data. Noticed the empty guide yesterday, but event log shows they started 10/30/14-

Go to the About Guide (Tasks/TV/Guide/About Guide) and you should see two listings for IDs one for Terrestrial and the other for your Cable Headend. If you only have one there you need to re-run tv set-up. It appears Zap2It has changed the way they're running cable stations guides with a "master" Terrestrial digital and then a second listing for cable channels. (Not my example above with two guide downloads one is for Terrestrial and the other is for my local TWC headend ID).

Chances are there is a change in your area in the way the guide is being sent and re-running tv set-up will get you proper data again.

I am seeing a very similar problem (Comcast, 80503 zip code) A couple of days ago I noticed my guide had basically run out. checking the Event logs showed Invalid HeadendId errors when trying to retrieve the guide. I re-ran setup on all my HTPC's and was able to get the guides populated. However, since then the guide updates have been failing every day with Unable to connect to the server errors. Will try the solutions for that but, from other posts, it sounds like that has not been working for others in this same area.

Further info on the problem. I tried pinging cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com and that worked. however pinging data.tvdownload.microsoft.com does not (times out). Similarly pinging the ip address given in the fix (65.55.5.170) also does not work. So adding a hosts entry for data.tvdownload.microsoft.com to point at that ip address will not really help. Anybody out there have a working ip address for data.tvdownload.microsoft.com? Since I suspect without that the updates will continue to fail.

It may simply not respond to pings. Mine times out too, but my guide updates work fine. Have you confirmed in event viewer that the updates are really still failing?

Yep, reading this thread further showed that pings may not respond.
Just checked the Event viewer and my guide update did indeed work.

Thanks

Does anyone know what is the status on the guide issues? Is this a Microsoft problem?

Hopefully Eric will report since he has some inside contacts with MSFT. The ticket remains active on MSFT Connect and I've been getting errors again the last couple of weeks that seem related to the Sports Schedule now.

Right now there seem to be a few problems still going on.

1. Invalid Headend IDs which might be part of a change on Zap2It and MSFT. This has happened on the TWC systems with a new line up and a few reported Comcast systems. These all seem to need two IDs now, one for the local headend and one for terrestrial digital guide id. (Re run TV-Set up to correct this)
2. Connection to server error which is a MSFT problem sometimes resolved with a different DNS such as google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Change DNS on the local machine on the Ethernet adapter to resolve this, if that doesn't work you can try changing to a hard wired IP in the host file but be aware that those numbers to change and might stop working in the future)
3. The new Sports Schedule error (This is a MSFT error)

Check Event Viewer for Applications and Service Logs and look at Media Center. Do NOT just look for errors but check each MCUPDATE entry and make sure it complete with success.

Congrats!

Just a note that the changes you made to the hosts file override DNS for those two domains, so changing the DNS server is not necessary in this situation.

Also, if Microsoft ever fixes this problem, you will want to remove those entries from the hosts file just in case they ever change the IP addresses for those servers.

Thanks for the help on this Space. I have been using Windows Media Center since the 2005 XP version. I have never had any issues until this last week. It looks like this guide issue haunts a lot of people. Hope Microsoft gets it figured out.
