ESHELL.EXE Crashing During TV Playback

#1

Post by ogiewon » Sat Aug 09, 2014 1:09 pm

All,

Hoping someone can please give me some troubleshooting tips...

My setup consists of an i5 based HTPC, with 8GB RAM, a 120GB SSD for the OS (Win 7 Ultimate x64), and a 1TB hard drive for Recorded TV. I have a Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe card and a Silicondust HDHR PRime Ethernet tuner. I also have 4 extenders connected over a Gigabit wired network. Everything has been fine for a number of years.

Problem started about 1 week ago, after several power blips due to a thunderstorm. The HTPC, which is always on, never sleeps, was blipped a few times during the night due to power outages. The system booted up fine, and everything seemed to be normal. Then, during playback of Recorded or Live TV, I started to receive a Windows notification that "Windows Media Center has stopped working" along with the option to Restart or Check online for a solution and Restart. Clicking details reveals that ESHELL.EXE has crashed, however there really aren't any more clues to the crash in the EventLog, unless I am looking in the wrong place. I am able to access the Guide without any problems (I have had a corrupted EPG databases in the past) and all of the RecordedTV shows (I have had a corrupted saved TV show cause weird issues too), so I am sort of stumped of where to look next. The problem also occurs on the Extenders from time to time. I have run MEMTEST86 and Prime95 to see if the problem could hardware related, but no issues are found. I have also rerun the TV Setup Routine.

The crash probably occurs about 4 to 5 times per day. I would really prefer to not rebuild the system from scratch as we have a lot of RecordedTV that we have not watched yet, which is protected by PlayReady DRM.

Does anybody have any tips on where to look next?

Thanks!!!

often the crash also states a 'Faulting module' which can help narrow down the actual cause of the crash.
Retain your sanity, use Shark007 Codecs

BlueScreenView might be a good place to start. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

Uploading a diagnostic to Ceton might help you eliminate the card as being part of the problem. Sometimes, when they have time, they might even target the problem for you.

It's pretty easy to eliminate the ram. Unplug the hard drive, and boot from CD/DVD. Test ram 1 piece at a time, in all motherboard slots.

Directions to test the power supply are widely published. Basically you jumper pin (16-17 I think) with a paperclip, and test voltages with a multi meter, match your test results to your PS specs. Not real difficult, but it's tough to take the family tv to the workbench.

You might want to get the family a cable box for a month. :shh:

Anybody else got a better idea?

Thanks for the tips... Next time it happens I will try to get more details of the fault within ESHELL.EXE. I have extensively tested the ram using MEMTEST86 - always comes out error-free. I let Prime95 run through its torture test with lots of ram tested - it too comes out clean.

I doubt the power supply is the issue since the Prime95 test would really stress it, the CPU, and the ram. I suppose the i5 integrated video could be the problem. Not sure how to stress test it for 2d video.

I really doubt it is the Ceton card since it happens during Recorded TV playback just as frequently as Live TV.

Other things that I have done are
-check both disks for errors - both came up clean
-performed the SFC /SCANNOW command which also comes back clean.

Some searches online seem to indicate the problem may be with a "Corrupted Media Center Data Store." Does anyone have any experience with fixing this type of problem? My biggest concern right now is that I do NOT want to lose my ability to play the DRM protected RecordedTV shows. Does anyone one know what are the do's and don'ts to ensure the PlayReady DRM is not affected? I understand that a clean install would clean up this issue, but that would no go over well with the family until they binge-watch all of the TV shows.

Thanks!

Well it appears that I have not vanquished my old foe... I had a good run for a few weeks with no EHSHELL.EXE crashes, but the problem has returned. The error report contains the following information:

Description:
Stopped working

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: CLR20r3
Problem Signature 01: ehshell.exe
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: 4a5bd053
Problem Signature 04: System
Problem Signature 05: 2.0.0.0
Problem Signature 06: 506c18e6
Problem Signature 07: 1fc1
Problem Signature 08: 1c8
Problem Signature 09: System.Net.WebException
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

The issue only occurs during video playback, either LiveTV or RecordedTV. The system can sit overnight with no video playing and EHSHELL does not crash.

I decided to bite the bullet and nuke the current installation of Windows 7 and start with a clean installation. I used a brand new SSD and do not have any old drives installed. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 wit SP1, loaded all of the latest drivers for my hardware, and then fully patched Windows 7. Everything went very smoothly. I then got media center up and running with my Silicondust HD HomeRun Prime and my Ceton InfiniTV 4. After WMC was all set up and happy (no issues at any point in the process) I added my 4 extenders (Linksys DMA2100, Linksys DMA2200, Ceton Echo, and XBOX 360.) I thought I was in the clear for sure....and then EHSHELL.EXE decided to start its crashing behavior once again. The crashes occur on the HTPC as well as on the extenders, independent of one another (not all at once). I once again ran memory tests and Prime95's Torture Test with no errors or issues. TV recording is not affected, only playback (I realize there are different processes for recording versus playback.)

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate them! Thank you!

Other software installed includes:
-Microsoft Security Essentials
-Windows Home Server 2011 connector
-Samsung Magician (SSD utility)
(Note: I did not, nor ever have, installed any codec packs.)

System Specs:
-Intel i5-2500k CPU
-Asus P8H67-M EVO motherboard
-8GB DDR2 RAM at 1333 (4 x 2GB Kingston)
-250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
-Integrated Intel HD3000 graphics (connected to TV via Onkyo HDMI Receiver)
-Antec 650W Power Supply

Well, that eliminates the SSD, the O/S, and WMC. Those are the toughest 3 to eliminate. What does BlueScreenView have to say about it?

Thanks for responding. Today I ran the system with half of the RAM (2x2GB) - crashed; swapped those two modules for the other two using different DIMM slots - crashed. Latest was to swap out the power supply, re-seat the Ceton card, re-seat the CPU and apply new heatsink compound. Waiting to see if it crashes...

"BlueScreenView" shows no dmp files (i.e. no BSOD's.)

Here's the details using "AppCrashView" of the latest crash. If you can glean anything from the data, I'd love to hear your ideas.

Turn on save dmp files. http://blog.nirsoft.net/2010/07/27/how- ... s-on-bsod/ New SSD, probably nothing there yet. Have a quick look in c:\windows\minidump

System was already set to save full kernel dump and auto restart. Changed it to save mini dump file instead. No dmp files yet. It is strange to me that only EHSHELL.EXE ever crashes. I am able to just restart MediaCenter (ehshell.exe) and everything seems fine until the next crash. If it were hardware related, I would expect other app crashes besides just WMC, or possibly a BSOD.

Memtest is great for some things, but sometimes Old School is the only way to know for sure.

This test will tell you if the ram and the ram slots on the motherboard are ok.
If you have 4 Sticks of ram, label them with a sharpie 1,2,3,4.
If you have 4 motherboard Slots, label them too 1,2,3,4.
Have a pen and paper to write the bios error when it trys to boot.
Disconnect the SSD from the motherboard
Set the bios to boot from CD/DVD
Put your Win 7 disk in the DVD

Try Stick 1 in Slot 1, boot, whats the error?
Try Stick 1 in Slot 2, boot, whats the error?
Try Stick 1 in Slot 3, boot, whats the error?
Try Stick 1 in Slot 4, boot, whats the error?

Then.....

Try Stick 2 in Slot 1, boot, whats the error?
Try Stick 2 in Slot 2, boot, whats the error?
Try Stick 2 in Slot 3, boot, whats the error?
Try Stick 2 in Slot 4, boot, whats the error?

Get the picture? All 4 Sticks in all 4 Slots will tell you which ram and which slots are NG or hopefully everything is OK.

Set to No Auto Re-start. That way if it's off when you get up in the morning you'll know it bombed out on ya. Load it up and leave it running till it breaks. HTPC, all the extenders, everything. With any luck, it'll run forever.

OK - I may have found a solution... I disabled the onboard Realtek Gigabit NIC and added an Intel PCI Gigabit NIC in its place. This was done Monday evening and I have not had a crash of EHSHELL.EXE since doing so. It is probably too early to declare victory, but it does seem promising.

Unfortunately, the problem has returned again... I have pulled the Ceton InfiniTV 4 card to see if it is somehow to blame. Next step may be a new Motherboard/CPU...

Shotgun troubleshooting, to hell with methodology. This is better than front row seats at the OK Corral. Go Ogie Go!

He got zapped a time or two during a thunderstorm. Suggested test ram, ram slots, and power supply. Replaced power supply, then new O/S. We thinks something got zapped. We don't know what. Could be ram, MB, maybe even tuner. Possibly something else?

Correct - as Crash mentioned, I have just about exhausted every piece of the HTPC at this point. The only items that I have not replaced are the Motherboard and CPU. I have swapped RAM from another system, a brand new SSD and Windows OS install, different power supply, etc... The only app that ever crashes is EHSHELL.EXE. No BSOD's. Just the same exe crashing from time to time while watching video (either live or recorded TV.)

I pulled the CETON InfiniTV card this morning since it was about the only thing I haven't tried. I still have my HDHR Prime connected so I can continue recording TV and watching LiveTV.

I am leaning toward buying a new motherboard, but the MicroATX socket 1155 board selection isn't all that great. The system really isn't all that old, so I'd rather not toss a i5-2500K into the spare parts bin quite yet... :)

Why buy a new MB if the tuner is fried? Test the tuner.

If removing the tuner solves the problem, then I won't be buying a new MB. If WMC continues to crash with the Ceton tuner removed (PCIexpress version) then I really only have the MB and CPU left that could be the cause of the issue.

Put down the shotgun for a minute. If it works OK after removing the tuner, this tells you 2 things. Either the tuner is fried or the pcie is fried. (could be they are both fried) Test the tuner in a different box, or same box different pcie.
