Any chance you can upload one of those videos somewhere so I can test it? I'd let you test one of my sample recordings, but they're all protected.

I zipped the three recorded TV files, uploaded them to Google Drive, and shared them. The main reason I zipped them is just so that I only had to upload one file, but it also saved almost 20MB. The zip file is 475MB.richard1980 wrote:Any chance you can upload one of those videos somewhere so I can test it? I'd let you test one of my sample recordings, but they're all protected.
You can download it at the link below. Click the link and then click the Download button.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9v3S7 ... sp=sharing
EDIT: I created the file with 7-Zip, but you should be able to open it with WinZip also, and Windows should recognize it as a "compressed folder" or whatever it usually says.
EDIT2: I just realized that you asked for "one" of those files, and I remember that you have a monthly cap on your Internet service. Let me know if you would prefer only one of them. Well, I've decided to just upload all three files separately so you can choose. I'll post the three links in my next post.

EDIT: Upon further inspection, the Hockey clip is MPEG-2, not MPEG-4/H.264/AVC. I just trusted the person who uploaded it that it was H.264, but it's not. So, you should test the other two clips instead. I tested all three on my new PC, and they all work fine.
OK, here they are. The soccer clip has the most motion. The hockey is next, and pet TV has the least motion.

Thanks. Both of the above files play fine on my system. However, the MPEG-4 streams coming from my cable company do not.
Despite being copy protected, MediaInfo can read my recordings. Here are two samples:
The only things I see different about my recordings are the inclusion of the text tracks and scan type being set to interlaced instead of MBAFF.

Interesting. I didn't know what MBAFF stands for, so I had to look it up. It stands for MacroBlock-Adaptive Frame/Field coding. Essentially, it means that each frame in the video can be a mix of progressive and interlaced. It sounds like it's superior to pure interlaced for video that may contain fast motion scenes. It seems to me that MBAFF would be more difficult to decode than interlaced, but it could be the thing that makes the difference with the Intel video driver and/or hardware.
I wonder if the copy protection is part of the problem. It would be good to know if anyone can watch a pure interlaced H.264 video that is not encrypted/copy-protected.

cmax,
Can you install a program named MediaInfo? You can find it here:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo
When you install it, choose the "Express (recommended)" installation.
After you have installed it, Open the Media Info program. When you open it the first time, it will ask you to choose some settings. Just leave it at the default settings, and click OK.
Now, in Media Info, click the "File" menu. Choose "Open" -> "File".
Browse to one of your recordings that does not play correctly, and open it.
Media Info will display some information about your file.
Please click the "View" menu, and choose either "XML" or "Text" (whichever you like). MediaInfo will display the information in either XML or Text format.
Next, using your mouse, select all the text in the window. Copy it, and paste it in a post here.

To the main question, the support person was incorrect. Support lifecycle policy for MSFT software policy is clearly stated and it is fully within that timeframe. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?LN=en-us Now that said, there is limits as to what that means and what they are willing to do. You can read through the specifics but there are plenty of things that are 'broken' throughout Windows and the other applications that simply won't be fixed unless it is deemed important enough (security, functionality issue for lots of people, problem for key corporate clients, etc). Plenty of bugs/functionality issues that are being and will be fixed of course.
Being in mainstream support doesn't mean because one channel in one country in a product they no longer actively develop will be fixed. Even if they did actively dev it, if it was an isolated thing it might not get attention. That doesn't mean it isn't a supported product officially. That all said, it is no reason to stop trying to escalate the issue as more often than not when something incorrect like "it isn't supported" is said, they are wrong about the core issue. Sadly I wouldn't say to expect it to be resolved, just saying you shouldn't accept a "sorry it is broken, deal with it" answer from them any more than you would any other software manf. "Squeaky wheel" rule applies everywhere.
