I had the same problem as everyone else starting on 1/10 in the evening.
Today, I issued the following command to have MCE update:
C:\Windows\ehome>start /wait mcupdate -uf
I am not 100% sure if the above command fixed the issue or if it was just good timing checking if things had been resolved.
Now Netflix is working again. I am glad to see Netflix work with MS, Or Netflix fixing the issue.

If you go that route I would recommend one of the Roku boxes, you can get the newer models for around $50-60 if you look around. Micro Center had one for $50 recently.

Just takes a regular HDMI cable to plug it in and it has Netflix functionality the same as you'd expect from WMC. I would imagine if you have a Harmony or something like that you can program it to work as the remote for it.

Good info, hopefully more people will test this out and confirm and thanks for letting us know.

I made no changes, but my Netflix in WMC is also now working again.

Yeah. I was just forcing Media center to do an update with "mcupdate". I am not sure how often MCE updates its self. I only assume once a day.

Working for me too now, without doing anything as well. In the spirit of Marv Albert (his sports commentating, not his penchant for biting), "Yes!"

Ok, I'm no longer getting the error that we were all getting last night... I'm getting this instead:

Any ideas? I tried updating WMC and nothing changed.

I can also confirm that all our complaining to Netflix and MS seems to have resulted in a fix. My Netflix is back up and running as well. To whomever provided the fix Thank you. My kids use the service quite a bit on multiple devices including media center. Glad they were able to get it fixed in a reasonable amount of time.

@ Foxwood I totally agree with your point about the extenders of old not being worth supporting since the companies that made them no longer support them either. But I am sure that a lot of people still use them and some might want to use them with Win 8. I agree that Win 8 for a HTPC purpose really gives the end user no reason to upgrade to Windows 8 over 7. Which just means less sales for MS to all us HTPC users. It just doesn't make sense to me anyway, that if they are going to include MC in 8 that they should at least allow the end user to use extenders that used to work on Win 7. I probably would have upgraded to 8 if they would have supported the old extenders and the echo but now it looks like I'm going to continue to use 7, which is fine really as 8 now really offers nothing over 7. Including lack of spider solitaire!! Damn you MS! LOL.

Working again here. I made absolutely no changes to my system. The Netflix plugin is separate and requires an uninstall and reinstall to update. I didn't do that this time. So netflix is lying once again, but at least they fixed it for now.

I'm sure Roku and others would work fine, but I'm not buying any more equipment.

Everything is working for me now as well. Didn't have to do anything, just start up WMC and tried again. All you haters need to chill a little bit. ;-) One day of outage isn't bad by pretty much any standard.

Thank you to all who contacted Microsoft and Netflix and got this issue resolved.

Let's hope that these recent instances have educated at least the people here enough that they don't immediately go about rebuilding their systems and reloading everything from scratch, under the misapprehension that "it must be something I did" or "it must be that my system is broken".

Ditto. Working here too again. I hope our quick, vocal complaints helped.

This is not the first time that netflix has messed up WMC and tried to blame Microsoft. But this is the first time that they were accused of running an ad which caused the problem. I was not able to confirm this, but it certainly sounds plausible. I was wondering if anyone else was able to confirm the presence of an ad.
