I'm just curious. Not counting your primary Media Center PC, how many Windows PC's do you have at home?

I voted three. I have two laptops (Vista and Win 7) and one XP desktop. If you were going to count the WMC machines I'd add two more.
Since I got the iPad (eagerly awaiting a "good" windows tablet) I rarely use the laptops. I use the XP box to connect RDP to do anything the tablet won't do.
I think I read in another post where you aren't really fond of tablets, but for everything but serious work, I'm loving it since I went to a tablet. I guess I'm getting lazy in my "old age". :)

Of course, for me serious work means at the desk with Windows 7 with two monitors and a proper keyboard and mouse.

I just don't see the point in spending more for a tablet than I can pay for a cheap laptop that does more than the tablet.

In my opinion, the only thing a tablet does better than a laptop is to be used as an e-reader... but that's what the original black-and-white Kindle is for.

Late last year, I purchased a Samsung Series 7 Slate and have been using it as my only work PC since then. It was more expensive than a laptop - but the increased portability and the touch/pen interface has been a huge plus. It's much easier to take to meetings - and I can use either a BT keyboard or a stylus (with text recognition) for entering text. And the slate has much longer battery life than any laptop I've owned (though I'll admit, I've trended to the "desktop replacement" laptops - which trade performance for battery life...).

While it can be used as an e-reader - it's a little too big for that - but it is an excellent mobile Windows Media Center. When travelling, I copy my Recorded TV and Videos - and can watch them on the Slate - great on an airplane!

After using the Windows tablet for over 6 months - even though the display is smaller - I don't see going back to using a laptop for work.

Before owning an iPad I thought it would be a silly oversized iPod experience and over priced for such a limited device. Well I happened to have won one and immediately realized how convenient it actually is. It is easy to keep close but out of the way and when you need it, it is instantly ready; use it for a minute or three and set back down or wedge it the couch cushion or whatever.

The apps don't compare to software written for PCs but is often somehow more useful. I would have loved if MyMovies made an interface to control my MC from my laptop but it took a tablet to inspire an obvious idea (for one example). I can pair my iPad with my iPod and have an instant audio/vieo baby monitor. So while the apps tend to be simple they are quite useful.

Comparing tablets to laptops isn't apples to apples per my initial thoughts although I did rid myself of my laptop as my iPad satisfied my portable needs. I'm back to using a desktop for my PC needs but it happens to be a lot smaller than my desktop PCs of the past.

I'm at ten right now. Most are old boxes just sitting and collecting dust but theyre still functional.

Right now I have running and functional:
1 windows 2008 r2 server serving as a domain controller and main server
1 gaming desktop pc
1 windows 7 ultimate x64 desktop running as my WMC server
1 desktop for doing pc builds and repairs
3 laptops (1 for the wife, my surfing laptop, and my 10" travel laptop)
1 older desktop pc running a bunch of Linux VMs that provide different functionalities (tarpit, backtrack, etc)

I am using 3 of the 5 as WMC's I would love to use extenders instead and I probably will when the Echo comes out but for not a W7 rig at every TV.

Got 1 HTPC, 1 ultrabook that plugs via USB3 into a two-monitor station (basically acts as a desktop), and then my old Tablet PC from 2006 (yes, I owned a touchscreen PC before it was cool.) Just recently disposed of my desktop PC from 2003, that later doubled as my HTPC for a short period of time.

These polls never seem to fit me, and crawfish is getting a little self-conscious about it! I want to answer both:
  • None. My Media Center PC is a multi-purpose PC.
  • One or two
