WMC on WIndows 11 24H2 not working?

#1

Post by dafob » Thu Jun 27, 2024 9:29 am

Has anyone tried WMC on the new 24H2 build yet?

Although it installs and launches fine, when I try to scan for channels it just stops at around 8%. Whatever channels it does find, when I try to view those channels I don't get audio (but video does work).

Sound is working in Media Center -- I can hear the clicks and the Media Center start sound, but no audio from TV channels.

WMC was working perfectly in 23H2 and previous builds.

Anyone else with experience on 24H2?

Yep same here, MS in the wisdom have removed the Dolby Digital codec from 24H2. Currently searching for a way to put it back!

Are these updates made to previously working wmc installation or an attempted new install or both? What tuners?

You could try reverting drivers, reinstalling the tuner drivers (other versions), different codecs and/or lav filter (for the sound/pic issue). I've had good luck with the shark007 codecs (choose wmc config).

It is a new 24H2 install , install from garyan2 (its worked perfectly on other versions) Its using a HDHomeRun Dual tuner. Major problem is no audio on HD stations using Dolby Digital Plus. I have installed K-Lite (will give Mr Shark a go) and set the decoder for AC-3 to LAV. Tried installing the latest Lav directly. and followed a number of posts that say they will get the AC-3 back into 24H2. none have worked!

Just tried Shark Codec pack, no luck I'm afraid, at some point a codec group will hopefully include this as a standard

I don't think it's just the Dolby Digital AC3 Codec causing the problem, because I've already restored that and almost every other codec I had before.

It must be referencing a file or assembly that Microsoft also removed because I can't scan for Channels either. It just "crashes" at around 8% and stops scanning.

Which installer are you using? Initially I used the garyan2 msi but when I found the issue I tried v13 and had major issues just trying to get any TV working! I went back to garyan2 and have tried it in metal and virtual with the same results.

Hi all,
Dolby Digital was removed by Microsoft when you make a clean Installation and an Update from previous Win 11 e. g. 23H2. If you recieve a TV Programm click right in the TV-Screen then choose Details and then Language. In German I have two choises with language German. One with Dolby Digital and one without. Choose these without Dolby Digital and Sound is on. But when you change the TV-Channel you must convert the Language again. And when you replay a recording also the same. But it doesen't work when playing a DVD.

Unfortunately no such choice for Australian TV!

The new 8.8.6 does indeed restore functionality and WMC is working again for me.

I still have an issue where I cannot scan for TV stations (the scan stops/crashes at around 8%), but adding the channels manually does still work.

Thank you for this new version!

Thanks Kevin for the effort you put in on this apparently out dated piece of software, 8.8.6 fixed the audio issue. What did Microsoft do?

My pleasure (WMC might be considered outdated, but it was really ahead of its time and I still love it... even after all these years using it daily )

Breaking WMC - which is no longer supposed to exist from Microsoft's perspective - is likely the least of their concerns, but I'm surprised they decided to introduce that breaking change. It doesn't only affect WMC but also WMP and probably lots of third-party programs.
Given Dolby Digital's patent expired a while ago, I'm not even sure why they're doing that. It's not like they could save a single penny from removing AC3/E-AC3...

Oh, and for those interested in the gnarly details, I wrote a blog post in 2018 describing the approach I've been using in all the 8.8.2+ installers to keep WMC working without having to touch the system DLLs: https://kevinchalet.com/2018/10/07/highway-to-dll-hell/
