Not updating to version 1.7.3.0

#1

Post by DementiaDog » Sat Dec 24, 2022 8:09 pm

I am currently running EPG123 v1.7.1.0. I've tried multiple times to update to v1.7.3.0 but not having any success. :(

After downloading the .ZIP file and double-clicking on epg123Setup_v1.7.3.0, the install process asks to update .NET Framework to 4.6.2, to which I then click on Yes. Next, files are extracted from the ZIP file and the Setup process displays "Preparing to Install". After a few moments it says I need to restart my machine, so I select Yes, restart the computer now.

After restarting, I launch EPG123 and it is still on v1.7.1.0.

I'm not seeing any Errors when I select View Log, but obviously something is amiss.

At this point I'm not sure where to look or what to do, so hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm guessing that there is some issue with the installation of .NET Framework 4.6.2.

You can try updating manually and see if that works. I think you can even update to the latest version of .NET framework (4.8) instead, but not sure about that one (wait for Gary to respond).

After the reboot, you need to run epg123 setup again. The first install is aborted to install the framework.

If you have already tried that, then try using windows update to install .NET 4.8.

I tried to manually update .NET Framework but I'm getting an error: "Blocking Issues: The .NET Framework 4.6.2 is not supported on this operating system"

I'm running Windows 7, Version 6.1

That's because you're missing a Win7 update for SHA2 support.

I'm sorry for being so helpless, but how do I get that Win 7 update? I get an "unknown error" when I manually Check for Updates. Ugh!

I'm not sure on the windows update part. You'll need to be at least SP1, but this post identifies the KB for SHA2. viewtopic.php?p=149133#p149133

Apparently there are two W7 updates that are related to SHA2 support: KB4490628 and KB4474419. I've tried downloading and installing both from the Microsoft Update Catalog but I get "The update is not applicable to your computer".

Yeah, this is very disappointing...can't get any Win7 updates to install :(

Check For Updates results with Code 80072EFE Windows Update encountered an unknown error

I've tried to manually download and install a few updates but I get "This update is not applicable to your computer"

Ugh!

Certainly one of the downsides of blocking updates. Take a look here. https://appuals.com/how-to-install-all- ... 7-at-once/

Here's something you might consider. I'll NEVER give up Windows 7 since I have HDHomeRun tuners and LOVE Windows Media Center, so I use 0patch.com to keep my system updated with the latest patches for Windows. They analyze Microsoft's ESU updates for Windows 7 and make up "micropatches" to implement Microsoft's updates. You'll want the "PRO" version which has a very reasonable annual subscription fee. I highly recommend checking out their website.

Yay, success! I finally managed to manually download and install SP1 and that in turn allowed Windows Update to work. It took a few hours to get caught up on all the updates. Next, I used the EPG123 version update to install the newer .NET Framework and just like that, boom, it worked! Woo hoo!

Gary, thank you for your help!
Mark, thank you for your 0Patch suggestion!
