No Movie/Poster Art Work

#1

Post by sbailey223 » Sat Oct 22, 2022 3:58 pm

Hello all, First post here!
I am having issue and hoping to get some help on it. The movie guide and program guide art work was starting to get a large number of missing ones so I upgraded from 1.7.1.4 to 1.7.1.12 because of the new token requirement for SD and now only a few are pulling and looking at the json file those images are being pulled from image.tmdb.org successfully. Ones from json.schedulesdirect.org seem to not be pulling.
I see no errors in the log file so not sure what is the cause.

Thanks!

In order to download images from SD, you will need to run the full setup package for EPG123. It installs a proxy/cache service for image downloads. The portable version does not include that service.

Oh, did not see that when reaching it. Do I need the Full Install or will Client Only Install work? I don't run the server / Service. Thanks!

The service needs to run on the same machine that creates the MXF file. If EPG123 is downloading the guide listings from SD on the same machine you are using WMC on, then a Full Install is what you need.

Thanks, Completed the install and images still not seen. see a bunch of error in the server.log now like below. in the configuration GUI on the service tab i did enable "Enable image caching for service clients" to see if that would help.

So, just looked under .\GaRyan2\epg123\images and see new folders and some movie artwork. Is this going to take time to pull everything from scratch then maybe?

Thanks!

Try [Clear Cache] in the configuration gui and running a new guide update using [Save & Execute]. The cached image links from a few months ago may be invalid.

I reset that the other day and there was nothing in the Cache and images folders, I did the above anyway and trying now but images seem to be pulling slow. Are they pulled down on demand or should the epg123 pull all images when the data is pulled from SD? It has only pulled 95 images little under 5 MB in the images folder.

Thanks!

Only on demand. I took a look at the images from your post above and they are movie posters. If you are looking at the movie guide, then it can be slow (and not download a lot of them) because WMC will request 24 images at a time but Win7 can only queue up 5 images to download at a time. The remaining images will not be responded to by the service. Win10 will handle up to 20 at a time.

If you scroll through the guide, do they download okay?

Only if I go back in the movie guide after some time I see some more populated, but not allot. I think MC gives up and then all the movie cards go blank on me. Yes, I am still on Win 7 as my Ceton cable card does not work on Win10.

Thanks!

More info: I've been trying to tweak this in, but Win7 does not do too well with the service running locally for downloading a lot of images in a short time period. With the OS only supporting a limited number of connections, and the number of connections basically being doubled (WMC->service->SD) for every request, it has problems.

It works much better if the service is running on another machine on the network but that is not a setup most folks can do.

I've never had a problem on Win7. If I go in to the Movie Guide and view all the images, they all load pretty quickly. I'm surprised to hear there is such a limitation. Perhaps a high broadband/Internet speed makes this less noticeable?

If the images are already cached, then it is much more stable and presents quickly. It is the need to download images as well that jams thing up.

Over time, as the local cache builds, you won't even notice.

Yeah, but I almost never view the guide, so have almost no cached images, but whenever I do go in to the "Movie Guide" the images seem to load up fairly quickly, so I don't think it has anything to do with the cache.

I've noticed that WMC seems to load the images only when it needs to display them, so I can bring up the "Movie Guide" and it will load the first few images... If I jump to say "T" by pressing "8" on the remote it jumps to the movies starting with "T" and starts immediately loading and displaying the images for the first few movies starting with "T". It loads up within a couple seconds.

Like sballey223 I too have lost most of the movie posters. When I go to Movies->Movie Guide in WMC it is mostly just colored squares with the movie title where the movie posters used to reside. If I try to access the colored squares it generates hundreds of lines of error messages in the service log like the examples displayed below:

Code: Select all

Series and program images are loading fine. I don't know when this started. Clearing the cache did not help.

As an aside I also noticed the following message "[10/22/2022 9:39:48 PM] /favicon.ico 404 Not Found" showing up in the service log frequently. I thought that a favicon was an icon associated with a URL. These are usually displayed with a bookmark in a browser. I don't understand what it means in this context. Do I need to do something to get rid of these "not found" messages?

Do you have more than one WMC/EPG123 system using your Schedules Direct account?

You can ignore the favicon.ico 404 status. Web browsers automatically request the icon when viewing a webpage and this version of the service will record it. Next version will actually include a favicon so it won't be reported in the log nor in the browser debug console.

The other errors about connection being closed is WMC timing out and closing the connection before epg123 can download and provide the image when there are a lot of requests in the queue. I believe I found the secret formula for the service and so far is a significant improvement... as in what you would expect. I'll do some more testing and release it as soon as I can. Right now I've been fighting with renewing my signing certificate renewal for the last month, but may go ahead and release it without signature for the next release.

What effect does the new version not being signed have on the install/usage of EPG123, if anything?

None. It will just give a different/more warnings when downloading and installing.

Just tested epg123 1.7.1.13. All images and movie posters are again being displayed. No favicon.ico 404 or connection closed error messages in the service log. All is well. Thanks Gary!
