RF Remote
I'm trying to help out a friend who's interested in using WMC7 but would like to use an RF remote. Is this KEYSPAN ER-V2 any good or is there something better?

I got this remote: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
However I would recommend finding a cheap USB Infrared receiver & then purchasing a Logitech Harmony remote

Neither the Rosewill you linked nor any inexpensive Harmony remotes are RF, which Mike is after. A smartphone app would be a good alternative and essentially free.

What cheap usb IR receiver do you recommend? I already have a Harmony one remote. I want it to control media center on my pc like it does on my xbox 360 extender. I bought a flirc IR receiver and it sucks. It doesn't have all the media center functions. I want to launch media center using the remote and control everything from the remote and not have to use a combination of the keyboard, mouse and remote.choliscott wrote:I got this remote: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

You need to do your homework on the Flirc. It's a blank canvas and can do anything and everything you can imagine. If you want limited functionality, any other dongle will do: MCE, Ortek, Diamond, etc.

Well I'm struggling with setting up the remote with the flirc. Maybe you could be helpful and suggest a starting point like what model number to use for the flirc.

Doesn't matter what you choose since Flirc can do any function from any signal. But Window Media Center SE is as good a place to start as any. Then pick the Windows Media profile in the Flirc GUI. Add any missing commands with the procedure below. You may also have to assign some buttons in your Harmony software under Customize Buttons. As I said, you have a blank canvas and no limits since both the dongle and your remote are fully programmable.

Read the reviews. Commenters say it's a full function remote for Win7 MCE but partly functional for Win8 MCE. Sold out on Newegg (your link) but available for $47 on Amazon. Some people think it's great, others complain that the range is short or they have to hit a button many times for it to work, and then the PC registers multiple presses. Maybe people have interference/dongle location issues, or maybe there is a bad antenna design.Mike88 wrote:I'm trying to help out a friend who's interested in using WMC7 but would like to use an RF remote. IMO $47 is a lot for a remote that might work.
