Windows 8 Pro: Unable to play files in WMC on Xbox 360

#1

Post by wrevilo » Wed Feb 06, 2013 11:38 am

Hey folks,

I have been struggling with this for a few days now. Everything worked perfectly under Win 7. However after making a clean upgrade to Win 8 Pro with the Media Center Pack, I cannot get Windows Media Center on my xbox 360 to play any files. All files (audio & video) are visible, but they refuse to play and generate errors like:

Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer

Doing one or both does not help.

A Homegroup is set up, I am on a private network, File & Printer sharing and Network Discovery are on and I can see the xbox and its Media Center Extender in Devices & Printers.

I have literally turned everything sharing related on and it still will not work!

I can play the files in WMC on my PC perfectly too...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

*sigh*

Same exact problem for me as well. Everything was working fine with Win 7, upgraded to Win 8 Pro, added the Media Center Pack and now boom, nothing will play. No types of files, at all, will play, even though they all show up in MCE like they normally do.

I've tried EVERYTHING and I don't know what to do next.

In a way it's great to find someone else experiencing this, although sorry to hear you are suffering too!

Sadly I have given up for the time being in trying to get things to work this way. It's really disappointing an all Microsoft ecosystem won't work together.

I would love to get in touch with someone at Microsoft. I have tried numerous support forums but haven't had any luck.

ya me too, I have a suspicion there is some sort of bug with the in place upgrade of 7 to 8 for media center. It obviously works for a lot of people but I'm definitely seeing others it's not working for. I really don't want to do a format and reinstall but I'm not hopeful for a fix.

hey again,

Eventually after so many attempts is now fixed.
I have done the following:
Remove Xbox MC from Devices & Printers
Delete the Mcx-1 folder from Users (I want to remove any exiting WMC user entry from the 'Local Users and Group'
Make sure that that from the 'Local Users and Group' > Group> HomeUsers the members contain your Mcx1-xxx and on my settings is also added the NT SERVICE\WMPNetworkSvc (xxxxxxxx)
Remove all entries from your Xbox :
Select Hard Drive or Memory Card , select Games , and then select your profile >Select Xbox 360 Dashboard , and then select Windows Media Center >Select Delete, and then press the A button.
Select the folders you want to Share.
Share them, so far everyone having this problem did this but what I found was that another bit that was required to make this dams thing works.
Right click on the folder, go to Sharing and click Share
From the 'File Sharing' Choose people to share with add from the drop down 'Homegroup'
Run the setup on your XBOX and add the libraries from your XBOX as well.
It should work....did try on mine few times and every time works.
Hope this helps everyone having this thing.
Cheers,
H

Hi Henran69, Still struggling to make this work for me. I have similar problems:

Everything is working fine and playing from the media center (windows 8.1); Xbox 360 is successfully connected to the MCE, I can see and play pictures from Xbox 360 using the Windows Media Center (extender) app, I can play music from Xbox using the Windows Media Center app, and I can see the tv recordigs on Xbox 360, however, as soon as I try to play them, I get the error: Video error: “files needed to display video are not installed". I can’t watch Live TV either (same video error message).

If I use the System Video Player on Xbox 360 instead, I can play the TV recordings from my MCE (windows 8.1). So it seems related specifically to the Windows Media Center extender app on Xbox 360, maybe not having the right privileges or something? The rights on the "Recorderd TV" folder on Windows 8.1 do have it shared with "Everyone", "Administrators" and "Homegroup" amongst others. Not sure if it related to that since Live TV is not working either (although I can see the guide etc..)

Is there anything that I do need to do additionally on the Media Center (windows 8.1) to allow Xbox 360 play/stream the tv recordings?

I followed most of your steps above, but without a successful result. I couldn't really follow the Media Center step: "Select Hard Drive or Memory Card , select Games , and then select your profile >Select Xbox 360 Dashboard , and then select Windows Media Center >Select Delete, and then press the A button." Because that doesn't seem to be the right menus (must have changed) but not sure if that is crucial to get it to work. Any more comments or suggestions really appreciated.

Cheers

So after almost 2 years, upgrading to 8.1, reinstalling Windows and using various different routers I am still unable to stream through Media Center.

Has anyone been able to figure out any solution? It is absurd that this is still not working!

LAV filters usually does the trick for me. What exactly are you trying to stream?

Sorry, didn't read the initial post. I though you were trying to play MKV or something like that. I see you're have trouble just using WMC and extenders in Win 8/8.1. I had no such issues on my Win 8/8.1 system. But it is important to cover all the basics like running and passing DCA, installing Play Ready, running DRM update from Microsoft, etc. The "files needed ..." error is most certainly DRM related.
