Simulate keyboard presses without Eventghost, etc
I seem to recall there was a way to hack the registry, such that a button press on the remote would issue a keyboard command in Windows without using Eventghost, Intelliremote, or similar. Am I wrong? I can't seem to find any documentation on it anywhere. Seems as MS has completely killed off the old TGB knowledge base and wiki.

Joe's idea looks good for re-mapping keyboard keys, but it sounds like the OP wants a way to remap the Media Center remote's buttons. I don't think Joe's suggestion will work for this.
Take a look at this thread:

And/or this tool:

EDIT: Sorry, ignore the link to the tool. I just noticed that the OP specifically does not want to use Intelliremote. But the thread in the first link should help.

There's also this little tool (link below). It edits the ReportMappingTable in the registry for you. Unfortunately, it does not have a way to add a key that isn't already defined in the ReportMappingTable. When a key isn't defined, then it performs the default function. If someone was to update this little tool to allow you to add new buttons, it would be ideal.

Thanks barnabas! (and cw-kid..) The info in that thread was exactly what I needed! (combined with the tool in your last post) Now I can reinitialize my display with HDMIyo by pressing the DVD Menu button!!! Hooray!barnabas1969 wrote:Take a look at this thread:

It seems totally awesome, but it felt like using a rocket launcher to kill a fly. If/When I get to needing to step things up a notch, Eventghost will be at the top of my list for automation.STC wrote:Nice!
Something against Eventghost? It's a really small unobtrusive app that opens up many other avenues of tweak.

Just for clarification, since my remote, and many other generic remotes, simulate keyboard presses, the app. will work fine to remap a remote button in such cases.barnabas1969 wrote:Joe's idea looks good for re-mapping keyboard keys, but it sounds like the OP wants a way to remap the Media Center remote's buttons. Yes, there is a recent thread about the FLIRC. It didn't seem to work well for that user. I can't find the thread at the moment.
