Xbox is hogging my router cpu 95%

#1

One of the kids just bought an Xbox 360. Yesterday I allowed it to connect to my wireless. Seems to be a bit of a router cpu HOG. I was unable to get on the internet from my HTPC tonight, so, I checked a couple things in the router. The Xbox wasn't taking a lot of bandwidth, but it was near maxing the CPU (bursts of 95%).

I have dis-allowed the Xbox's MAC until I can figure out what to do. Would it be any less of a hog if it were on a wired connection? What is the best way to regulate the Xbox's use of my router's cpu?

It might help if you mention the model of router, so that someone else with the same setup can compare what they're seeing.

Oh. Your right. I didn't think about that. My router is an Asus RT-N56U running Padavan firmware 3.0.3.1-027.

The indicator I was talking about was the CPU Load. Normally the load is 1-5 %. When the Xbox is on, it's up to 95%

After thinking about it for awhile, it's probably normal for the CPU load to rise when using the Xbox wirelessly. I don't know what the kid was doing, and it doesn't really matter. But let's just say he was playing a game or watching some Netflix or whatever. Visually, maybe not data so much, there was a lot going on, and my router was beaming it maybe 20 feet, through drywall, 2 X 12 floor joists, hardwood flooring, 5/8" underlay, and carpet. I didn't hear any complaints about quality, so, the router must have been keeping up. However I don't think its a great idea to be maxing the CPU for hours at a time, so, we are going to try a wired connection next, and maybe the router won't have to work so hard to keep up.

I'm pretty sure the CPU isn't involved too much when it comes to pusing the wifi signal through walls and floors - the CPU would be involved in encryption, but it's hard to see how a single connection would saturate it.

Beats me. Only Padavan would know for sure. Not sure if I want to get a Linux lesson right now. Ran a wire up there, the symptoms are gone.

Xbox is on port 17. Seems to be running the game OK.
