TV Setup Cannot Continue - WMC Setup Issue

Hi folks,

Spectrum tweaked my CableCard setup (Tuner Adapter config. went AWOL and they cannot get it working (even with a new TA)) a few weeks back, long story short my WMC setup on my Win7 PC got blowed up or corrupted or something.

Have been trying to do the TV Setup on WMC but every time I try it I get the message 'TV Setup Cannot Continue - TV Setup has encountered a serious problem. Select Finish to exit, then try again. If this problem persists, restart Windows Media Center or the computer.'

Of course the problem persists no matter what.

I powered down the CableCard holder (SiliconDust HD Prime tuner) and just tried setting up the just OTA signal via a SiliconDust Connect Quatro tuner but got the same result.

I've seen some fixes out there that require accessing the Registry to make changes or disabling/renabling WMC for a clean start but would really like to know if other folks have resolved the TV Setup Cannot Continue issue and can offer a fix.

My equipment/service
Windows 7 Ultimate OS
SiliconDust HD Prime Tuner for the (Spectrum supplied) Motorola CableCard
SiliconDust HD Connect Quatro Tuner for OTA channels
Motorola Tuner Adapter (Spectrum Supplied)
Spectrum services: CableTV, Internet, Phone (landline)

In the meantime I'm running the SiliconDust HomeRun app. with the SiliconDust DVR service on a Windows 10 PC and getting by but it's not the same as a legacy Win7 WMC setup!

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Modifying the registry can be risky, so ensure you back it up first. Here’s a potential registry fix for WMC issues:
Open the Registry Editor:
Press Win + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
Navigate to the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\TV
Export the TV key:
Right-click the TV key, select Export, and save it as a backup.
Delete the TV key:
Right-click the TV key and choose Delete. This will force WMC to recreate it.
Restart your computer and try setting up WMC again.
3. Check Windows Media Center Services
Ensure that the WMC services are running properly:
Open Services:
Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
Check the following services:
Windows Media Center Service: Should be set to Automatic and running.
Windows Media Center Scheduler Service: Should be set to Automatic and running.
Restart the services:
Right-click on each service, choose Restart.
4. Reinstall the Windows Media Center TV Pack
The TV Pack for Windows 7 can sometimes become corrupted. Reinstalling it might help:
Download and Install TV Pack:
Search for the Windows Media Center TV Pack for Windows 7 and reinstall it.
5. Reset the Media Center Database
Sometimes, resetting the WMC database can resolve issues:
Stop WMC Services:
Open Services (as described above) and stop the Windows Media Center services.
Delete the WMC Database:
Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\.
Delete the epg and mcepg folders.
Restart WMC:
Restart your computer and try setting up WMC again.
6. Run the System File Checker
Corrupted system files can cause issues with WMC:
Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
Press Win + X and select Command Prompt (Admin).
Run the System File Checker:
Type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Wait for the scan to complete and follow any instructions to fix issues.

Hi dimensionserve,

Thanks for responding and apologies for my late response.

Yeah, there was no way I was going to touch the registry!

In the end I came across an old thread (think it was from 2022) within the Green Button that helped me fix my issue.

it involved disabling WMC via the Turn Windows features on or off widget, rebooting, the re-enabling WMC via the WF widget. To find the widget just type 'Turn Windows.....' in the Start page search box and it'll pop up for selection.

Cheers.
