It was bound to happen, but I don't know about being able to renew at the old rate only within 45 days before expiration, they may be looking at many people making a new account just so they can "renew" at the old rate on 3/30. If you are within 4 months of expiration, it makes economic sense to just create a new account and have the two subscriptions overlap for those 4 months (and then let the old one expire).
Mine expires on 3/29, so pretty much perfect time for the increase for me, but for those within a few months of expiring on 3/31, it might make sense to just get a new account at the old rate on 3/30 instead of renewing the old one.
I'm not sure how big a burden it would be to have all those new accounts being created (or even how many people would even bother to do this), but just something to think about. Maybe increase that 45 day renewal window from now until 3/31 just to avoid this.

I just renewed mine for the year. I'd pay $50 a year if I had to, but pricing it too high might cause too many people to stop subscribing. Should we worry what happens if SD stops offering the guide someday?

I initially thought a $10 annual rise was a bit steep. But then I remember that 20 years ago Tivo charged £10 a month for guide data!
