v1.6.3.1 Release
New release to include a fix for a corner case, but there is an added option to use 16x9 program images (not movies) that actually looks pretty good. SD is working on providing more images to include, in addition to the series images, the season images and sport event images.

Interesting. How does the details panel handle the difference between 16x9 and 4x3 (movies)? Do the text parts move position according to the listing type?

It scales to fit in the normal 4x3 area so will appear smaller. Same for the channel details.

I may have misread your question. Movies stay with the 2x3 poster size. The change is only to all the other types of programs.

Ah OK, so the image is actually smaller in terms of screen area. From the examples so far it looks like the art used is just a crop of the 4:3 image.

For the most part yes. It looks like the 16x9 image is typically cropped to create the 4x3, but the text may be resized/moved to adapt. The sports team event in the first post shows differences in the background image, but I would expect that is mainly due to the artwork being generated with format specific backdrops and then overlaid with the team logos.

Here's a simple compare for an example.

Just a note to anyone changing to 16x9. The cached link to the series 16x9 image is to the medium sized image which is 960x540. This is significantly larger than the medium 4x3 image which is 360x270 and can take a moment to download and render in WMC. This release will start using the small 16x9 image which is 480x270 and will be on par with the download and render speed to the 4x3.
All series images are refreshed once a month on random days so eventually all 16x9 image links that are cached will be to the smaller image. If you don't want to wait the month for the full transition, you will need to clear your cache and rebuild.

The background cropping is slightly different in all and the show title is sized/positioned differently. So it looks like these are actually being created by hand, for the different formats, using common elements.
I took it for a spin on my VM and the 16x9 images run into the left-hand edge of the screen. I assume this is due to my theme which is based on Modern8. It can probably be tweaked in the theme but I think I will continue to use 4x3. Just something for other theme users to be aware of.

When was the last time you applied the Tweak WMC guide? I just checked on a Modern8 here and don't have that issue... image and text placement are the same as you see above.

Love the new sized images, thanks for adding!
I am using a weird combo of MMUI+, MCT with a modded Modern8 and epg123 Tweak WMC for my setup and can confirm there's no issue with the placement of the new images on my screen.

Tweaks were last applied on 20th March using v1.6.3.0.
I re-applied them and that fixed it. Is it expected to have to re-apply when switching image format? I just changed the image setting on my main machine and that showed the correct layout immediately without the need to re-tweak. Just some wirdness on my VM I guess.
Are there any other formats available for movies? The posters look a bit weedy in comparison. Or would that mess up the Movies view? (not something I use)

The movies have all the same available aspect ratios as well, but yeah, it really messes up the Movies view and fits them into the 2x3 frame without maintaining the aspect ratio.
