v1.6.2 Release

#1

Post by garyan2 » Sun Feb 07, 2021 6:14 am

Some minor fixes, but some big improvements to Tweak WMC.
highlights.png
Some of the highlights:
  • can add movie year in the guide
  • can add episode titles in the guide
  • can expand the clock to include the date
  • program details fonts now scale with selected font size
  • if channel numbers are hidden, adds channel number and callsign to details
  • much better sizing and location in the channel column
  • filter button and menu (view categories on the left) scales with selected font size
  • program details view adds more white space for better viewing
  • and a few more... see if you can find them

... now for the "huh?" My Win7 VMs are showing a little artifact that I cannot seem to track down. I've spent way too much time trying to take care of this annoyance, but I am at a point where I don't even know if it is real or just due to video drivers in the VM. If anyone using version 1.6.2 on Win7, please let me know if this is happening after you apply settings from Tweak WMC.

Basically, if you focus on a channel in the channel column, either the 6th or 7th row, check to see if some of the text in the filter button is getting blocked. This is very location specific and may come back on its own. It will certainly come back on a repaint. You can reference the pic below to see that the text "VIEW CATEGORIES" has been partially blocked to only read "VIEW CATEGOR".

I'm thinking this is actually real since MS did some strange things with that filter button. It was oversized and the text was pushed to the left. I can avoid this problem the same way by making the button wider, but it is not something I particularly want to do for aesthetic reasons.

Thanks Gary that is looking really smart. I've sent you a beer/coffee.

EPG123GuideTV.PNG

Has the "append series and episode to description" option always been for the long description only? It would be nice to add this to the short description too. If space is a factor then a short format like (S01E01) could be used.

Edit: I’ve just realised that Recorded TV HD uses the long description in it’s program details panel. This will be why I am used to seeing the series and episode info in that location.

Version 1.6.2 on Windows 7 Pro (64). Here's the channel column with the 6th and 7th row focused after applying Tweak WMC.

NOTE: I never lose any characters from "View Categories" no matter what channel is in focus.

Would you be able to DM (or post) your Tweak settings? I'll duplicate those and see if that makes a difference.

That's good to hear. Really the only setting that matters is your 'Guide Cell Font Size'. The block amount may be less the larger the font size is, but really if you don't see it with your current settings, then you're not going to.

Kinda ticks me off a little. I spent a very long time trying to track the source of what I was seeing in the VM. There was another quirk I had that I simply "disabled". Now that both may not be real, I'll take some time later to install Win7 on a real machine to check it out.

Thanks!

Gary,

Under the rubric of reporting other improvements in 1.6.2:

I set my schedule update time to 4:30 to allow more than an hour ahead of the 6:00 PBS Newshour recording since you said it had to be more than an hour ahead to avoid the "waiting for recordings to end" message. That worked. Then today I set the super bowl preshow show to record at 5:00, a half hour ahead of the scheduled update, and the update happened perfectly. So I take it you changed the lead time requirement. What is the new lead time, or did you fix this some other way?

Another tiny improvement, but much appreciated. After I installed 1.6.2 I opened the server gui and ran "save and execute" because my schedule was out of date. Then when I run the client gui, the running time of the last update is reported correctly. Previously it wasn't reported correctly, until a scheduled update happened.

Thanks for both of these improvements!

Tim

The garbage cleanup is run every 5 days, it is only then that you need the 60 minute buffer. For the 4 days between garbage cleanups, you only need a 10 minute buffer the import. No change in this method since last release.

Not sure about the reported time of the last update. It is reading from the scheduled task when it was last run and the status and a [Save & Execute] will not do that for you. However, if you performed an update using the tray 'Update Guide Now' menu, then that runs the scheduled task which will update the date/time and status.

I swear it doesn't matter to me when the garbage cleanup happens because I have the update task well out of the way of any usual recording I would do, but...
maybe the garbage cleanup could be changed to every 7 days with the choice of which day of the week that is. This could be set up even easier if the GC was its own separate task apart from the update task.

Hi Gary!

My first garbage cleanup occurred on June 22, 2020. Every morning I check to see if you have any new EPG123 versions available, and if so, I immediately update.

In my case PerformGarbageCleanup appears to take an average of 10 minutes. For me it's been rock solid as the following report indicates.

In a nutshell, this has been working flawlessly for me! Thank you!

Good to hear. Thanks @StinkyImp.

I just released a new version to finish off Tweak WMC. Just the final touches because I like to be thorough.

What do you think about the suggestion to add the series and episode to the short description?

I think it would be useful to have the information available in the program details pane when browsing the guide, without needing to go into the full details. If space is a factor then a short format like (S01E01) could be used.

Why not enable the option to have it prepended to the episode title?

Because it then appears everywhere the episode title is used.
Personally, I prefer the cleaner episode names without the prefix. Especially when you have some non-series shows which just have a production number.

I see no harm in this option if people want it. I personally think the short descriptions are a little frustrating because even though they are shorter than the long descriptions, they still tend to be too long to fit in the area they are displayed, and there is no way to read the part that is cut off.

If you click through to the details, it displays a completely different description (the long description). There's a part of me that thinks just using the long description in both places would be better. But I understand not wanting to do that from both a functional (sometimes the short description does fit) and a formal (short descriptions exist and WMC has a place for them, so...) reason.

Perhaps instead of adding the option you are proposing, just add the option to not include short descriptions in the generated guide, this would force WMC to use the long description in both places (and make the XML file smaller), and since there is already an option to prepend the season/episode to the long description, you get what you want. Adding that to the short description would make it even longer and make it even more likely that it would not fit anyway, so might as well just use the long description.

It is pretty rare that a short description will not be fully visible (certainly if you use TweakWMC to give it more room). The only time when it is not completely visible is when there is no short description and WMC uses the long description in that view.

You guys are killing me with these S/E options.
  • before the episode title
  • after the episode title
  • beginning of the description, but not before the short description because it takes too much space
  • at the end of the description
  • sXXeYY format
  • Sx:Ey format
  • user defined format
  • beginning of the short description
I'll take a look to see what it would take. I can get rid of the button to download all sd logos to give me some room for another s/e option.

Well, it's happened many times to me, perhaps I tweaked the viewing area to be too small.

Don't add the removal of the short description on my account, even though it gets cut off for me, I probably would leave it the way it is. I was primarily suggesting a possible alternate solution to IT Troll's issue.

You have clearly spoilt us. ;)

I have just tried the Sx:Ey format on the episode title and I actually like that. It works particularly well for reviewing other showings when the show doesn't have unique episode names. I think the last time I looked at it we only had the sXXeYY format which I wasn't keen on.

I started to think about a user defined format (like you have for the filename), which could take a number of patterns (%s, %0s, %e, %0e), and then a series of dropdowns to configure where that is placed.
  • Episode Title: off/prepend/append
  • Short Description: off/prepend/append
  • Long Description: off/prepend/append
However, then you would need options for those with a production number. Then what if people want both short and long forms in different locations...

In short, don't do anything on my account. I'm happy with the episode prefix now I've seen it's added utility. Thanks Space for pushing me in that direction and Gary for the reminder on the alternative format.

EDIT: I see this has been answered in other topics. Been having issues with thegreenbutton.tv site lately where firefox says that the Secure Connection failed: An error occurred during a connection to www.thegreenbutton.tv. PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR

There must have been some kind of issue on Schedules Direct's servers and it is causing duplicate listing updates on different days. These log messages are telling you about this issue and that it will not load those updates for that network/day due to not being able to verify why there are duplicates (there should not be) and not being able to trust the data.
