Restoring DBS channels deleted in client

#1

Post by UKCR » Wed Mar 18, 2020 11:28 am

I'm running Windows 8.1 and use WMC in the UK with A DBS T2 twin tuner card.
In general everything works as it should. I can view & record etc as normal. My problem is that I deleted some channels in the EPG123 client (these channels no longer appear in the EPG or settings in WMC) that I'd like to get back.
When I try to do this via WMC TV setup Single Transponder Scan, I can enter all the details of the satellite transponder I'm wanting, but after searching it finds no new channels. It displays a full green signal bar, so I'm sure lack of signal isnt the issue.
I did try the restore facility in the EPG123 client, but with no luck, as the deleted channels do not return after the restoration.

Is it possible that WMC still 'thinks' the deleted channels exist in its database somewhere, so when asked to search for them again it retruns the no new channels message?
In any event, can you recommend a work around that doesnt involve ditching the whole database and starting again? (There's an awful lot of channels out there that I don't want, and it's a long process sorting the wheat from the chaff!)

Thanks

Yes, OTA ATSC channels have the same problem whereas if you delete the channel, WMC will not add it back in on a subsequent scan. We have the option to [Delete all channels] and scan again without going through an entire TV Setup, but I don't know if DVB-S (or even DVB-T) have that option.

Basically you are correct. When you delete a channel, WMC just disconnects it from the Scanned Lineup but it remains in the database. When you scanned your transponder again, WMC sees the channel but doesn't do anything since there is nothing new to add. What I would like to do is create a method to maybe undelete channels, though that has some risks I think.

Could you create a backup of your database configurations and send the file to support@garyan2.net using the [Backup] button in the client? I'll use your example and make one of my own to try and figure out how to do this.

Thanks Gary.
I’ve sent you the back up file you requested.
Thanks again for looking into this.

Okay, found a method to undelete channels. I'll try to release an update quickly for this... this feature will be very handy.

Scratch that. It only lasts 30 seconds and then gets removed again. I've got some more work on this.

Sorry, I haven't had much time to work on this one. Hopefully I can get back on it this weekend.

I haven't had a lot of time available to work on this, or much of anything. Has it really been a month already?

I think it might be easier for me to provide a method of manually adding the channel, rather than "undelete" a channel. Most of that code is already in place.

Normally, when I've deleted a DVB-S2 channel and re-added it by scanning for new channels, WMC adds the channel at the end of the list with an arbitrary number and sometimes it doesn't have the correct name. Other times, it doesn't find it because it actually exists but has an arbitrary number and/or the wrong name.

I think it Is because the setup data is so out of date that it doesn't know how to map it.

As you say there are an awful lot of channels that are no use to man nor beast and it can take some sorting through so what I normally do in either case is to open the EPG123 client and sort the channels on the left hand side with the TuningInfo column then scroll down to find the required frequency and transponder and edit the required channel.

Unforunately when I try to re-scan the frequency of a channel I've previously deleted Media center finds no new channels, so nothing is added anywhere in the client. Hence my original question.
Gary I can see your point re being easier to add a channel rather than restoring. I realise you're very busy, but am keen to avoid having to do a complete deletion of the existing databse, and starting again, if at all possible.

Thanks again

Okay, I think I've got a method to undelete the scanned channels. I was overcomplicating things, but it was still difficult to figure out. I definitely need to work on it a bit to make it less hacky and more friendly. Hopefully I may even find a better way, but I now know it is possible to revive a deleted scanned channel.

On another note I could, with just one line, restore every single deleted channel all at the same time. Trust me, you don't want to do that.

Hello again

The 'undelete' channels button seems to have stopped working since the last few updates.
When I try to use it, the client just exits and on opening the client again the selected channel has not been restored.
Has the method for undeleting changed, or is this a bug?

Thanks

Sorry, I broke that in 1.6.0, but will be fixed in the next release in a few days. You can downgrade to 1.5.1 temporarily and it will work.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Gary.
Glad to hear it wasn’t something at my end.
I’ll hold off for a few days for the next release; just been tidying things up!

Season’s Greetings.
