Windows 7 what Monthly Rollup is needed

#1

Post by DNorth3429 » Sat Nov 16, 2019 9:44 pm

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 and last monthly rollup was Nov 18 2018. Do I need to Install current monthly rollup?

Do you use your PC for anything other than WMC?

If not, you don't need to do anything.

I am currently debating this myself, I haven't updated my Win7 WMC HTPC in years, and I understand that there is minimal risk of leaving it that way if I only use it for WMC (which I pretty much do), but I do occasionally use the browser to download stuff for the machine, so that elevates the risk somewhat.

If there is no harm in getting the latest/last patch for Win7, then why not? Is there a disadvantage to doing it? If it can only help and not cause harm then I see no reason to not do it.

In the new year, I assume Windows Update will no longer work (at some point), but I am not sure about downloading updates separately, will you still be able to do that and will it update you to the same level as Windows Update would?

that's a huge question, every time: "if there's no harm in it..." HUGE "if".

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Can you download "stuff for the machine" from somewhere else?

Sure, I can download it with something else, but it can be more convenient to do it while I'm there already and need something quickly.

Plus, an unpatched machine on your LAN (that you don't use to access the Internet) is only as safe as the least secure device on your LAN that does access the Internet.

It's always best to have the latest security patches on a machine, even if there will be (inevitably) unpatched vulnerabilities on Win7 that are discovered later.

In particular, I don't want to loose the option of patching my Win7 machine after 2019, so if I can still decide to do that at a later date (by downloading one or more rollup patches) then I would feel better not doing it before the end of the year. I don't know much about how Win7 patches are distributed and if they will still be available after 2019.

I only use it for WMC. I stopped updating when MS was trying to force Win10. So I'll leave well enough alone
