Set Recordings file name on existing files

#1

Post by lurch66 » Mon Sep 16, 2019 7:48 pm

I would like to rename all recording in my current recordings folder to a new naming convention. I have already changed it for all future recordings. Is there a way to go back and rename existing recordings? Something like a checkbox for "apply to existing files"?

The feature that allows you to change the filename format used by future recordings is part of WMC. The EPG123 utility just modifies the registry entry that controls how the files are named by WMC. There is no tool that I know of that will rename old files to whatever new naming convention you chose.

If the new filename contains a subset of the data that was in the old filename, but you just rearranged it or removed some of it, you could use one of the many fee bulk file renamer utilities available that allow you to use regular expressions to rename files based on the old filename. But if you need to rename the file based on data not already in the existing filename (perhaps pulled from the metadata in the WMC file instead), then I'm not aware of any tool that does that. But I am not that familiar with the tools that use other methods or renaming files such as pulling info from the Internet based on the limited info in the existing filename, so that may be an option (one example is https://www.tvrename.com/ which I just googled and don't know much about).

^Space is correct. I'm not aware of any tool that will scan the metadata of a WTV file and rename the file as you wish. This is not something EPG123 does.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for... You could maybe look at WTV MetaRenamer:

Possibly a discussion for another thread really....

I've never seen that. How does that work?

It's not a feature in WMC really..... it's a registry key that you can edit:

Sorry Mods - I think we've gone off topic!

It's a feature of WMC that can only be changed via registry editing, but it is WMC that looks at that registry entry to determine how to name the recorded file. So, there is no GUI interface in WMC to modify the file name, but it IS a feature of WMC, not some external program (like EPG123).

The EPG123 utility just allows a more user friendly way of editing that registry entry (as it does for other features of WMC that can only be changed via registry entry changes).

That looks cool. I wasn't aware of this program. Looks like it pulls info from the metadata within the WTV file and lets you rename the file using that info... may be just what you are looking for.

Just on a side note, it's interesting that the metadata is apparently non-encrypted or copy-protected in any way even where the actual TS content might be.

So whereas the WTV file itself can only be played by WMC via Playready if it is copy-protected, there's nothing preventing actually reading the WTV file and extracting/using the metadata for that same copy-protected file.

Interesting.

Thank you for all the advice. I will look in the other options for renaming.

I found the below link and it works well but it does not add the episode title. "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood_s01e15"
Is there a way to modify the script so the file name looks like this?

"Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood_s01e15 The Class Votes; The Neighborhood Votes"

moderator I apologize if this is to far off topic please move to appropriate thread if needed.
