Fresh Windows 7 install and WMC setup fails silently around AutoSetupScanner

#1

Hello,
It appears I made a mistake or two setting up WMC this time on Win7. I had it running for a few years but had issues since the guide changeover. I have been busy and just never got around to looking into why it wouldn't update the guide for the cable channels not available over the air. Honestly I tried some things to fix it over the years but about 2 weeks ago I decided I was tired of it not working. So I tried the recovery task and it appears something else was wrong for sure after as PlayReady wouldn't update. Oddly it was the current version but WMC said it needed updated and wouldn't let me finish the setup. I looked for ways to fix it and attempted the reset DRM tool and turning the WMC feature on and off along with deleting the ehome folder in program data. When I was out a couple of days trying to fix PlayReady I assumed I could reinstall and get it functional faster then discerning why my guide was (I thought incorrectly) corrupted. It turns out the source of the 4 channels I had data for wasn't the cable company in my zipcode at all.

So I made recovery disks and reinstalled Windows 7 with a reformat. Honestly I just expected the setup to work like it used to. I assumed something in the registry got off or a crash had compromised a file that the system file check can't/wouldn't find. So I got Windows 7 installed and updated (likely a part of the trouble) before starting on WMC. Once updated I installed the Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650. I had to manually install the Digital Cable Advisor and for that I needed a version of IE that didn't whine about being too old when I went to Microsoft's site. I also ran the PlayReady install. After that I ran the setup. I accept and fill in what needs to be for my area and I get to where there should be a channel scan and nothing seems to happen. I couldn't remember if that was ok for the cable card tuners as they keep a channel list. After a few forwards and nothing indicating a problem I get to the screen that offers to let me finish the setup with 2 tuners and digital cable. I click finish and everything looks ok. My log file isn't OK though as it has several failures and says it completed with Reason BackedOut. I had 10 days of guide data from install and it ends tomorrow at 6PM. The guide auto Updates every day and the OTA channels are current but Digital Cable isn't. I don't believe it is a cable card issue as I can tune the channels in just fine and my tuner lists things that are only populated when activated.

Hardware Acer Aspire Revo ( I forget the exact model but dual core 1.8GHz)
4GB ram (max for board)
Hauppauge WinTV-DCR-2650 (no PCIE slot so about the best I could get.)
WIndows 7 up to date with Media center installed.

So does anyone know what’s going wrong with my setup?
Should I try to reinstall and setup media center before updating at all?
Should I update to SP1 before WMC?
Any help is truly appreciated.

I think your question about SP1 may be the answer. Unless you get SP1, Windows won't get all the updates.

So I need to reinstall to get the setup to finish correctly?

I suppose if that’s the case I hope I never have to setup the guide again. It seems like a miserable solution to what is essentially intentional forced obsolescence. Well good job Microsoft.

So Randomly today the guide just filled with all programming from all channels. I haven't changed anything nor did I update anything. I really don't get WMC. I Suppose not looking at this for months made it fix itself.

I should have said I got one week of guide data in one lucky pull. Obviously the guide will not work except for local channels nearly all the time. Obviously Microsoft isn't going to fix Windows Media Center. Obviously without the guide this computer is very nearly worthless as a PVR. So short of marking the hardware as wasted and using this as part of my decision making process in the future what can I do?

Since Microsoft got their money they don't seem interested in fixing their product. What can I do to fix what Microsoft did to the guide?

Is there another piece of software that will work with a cable card tuner and record encrypted channels?

Reinstalling anytime I need to go into setup is really an awful solution but as Microsoft can't fix it and that seems to be the only maybe possible workaround is that it? Do I honestly have to trust maybe SP1 ish security to run the PVR but I also have to get the files to build the guide from somewhere?

I know it's been 4 years for me so maybe I should have given up a long time ago but when it worked it was pretty ok. Not great and maybe not even that good but far better then nothing. Until the guide provider changed it at least usually worked. Since this was a major selling point for Windows 7 it feels like a pretty poor way to treat customers. You sell something that makes money. Then you cripple it and give the customers the proverbial finger. The last 6 OS installs I have done 4 where Arch Linux and one was octopi one was a Windows 10 Virtual machine. If I didn't need windows for one piece of software it would have been 5 installs. Anyway I am venting mostly and feel cheated and used. I do appreciate any help trying to fix the dumpster fire that is Windows Media Center. Even if that help is stop trying to use Microsoft products.

Look into EPG123 there is a whole subforum here about it. Will provide a better guide than the current Microsoft guide long after Microsoft stops providing the guide come January.

So for some reason this worked to get about 10 days of guide data.
mcupdate.exe -uf

I'm wondering if I can use.
mcupdate.exe -u -pscn 0 -dbgc
This would skip the forced recovery and clean up the database.

I will try to report back if in a week this actually does get me another 10 or so days of guide data.

I should still find an alternate guide as I have maybe 2 months left.

Will that one piece of software run under Wine?
