I just finished up my last machine. Have had the same error on several installs now. Using client set-up I start the install and get the three boxes and click on box one and it does back up and create the new data base and moves to TV Set up....This last one took five hours on an HP Pavilion with an AMD Quad processor. But when it finished the program kept waiting for the user to close WMC. It never recognized it closed. When in frustration I went to close the box it told me that the tweak for the tuner increase didn't stick (they were all installed) and did I want to re-do tv set-up (I did not). I then fumbled around to get the guide downloaded from the server machine and recognized and got the guide installed (have a RED logo on the WMC Splash screen).

This isn't the first time, happened with a Dell Laptop with an I5 and a Lenovo running 8.1 instead of 7 Pro.

Is there a way to manually do an install? I have to help a friend update their HP Pavilion and don't look forward to another 5 hour TV set-up and then a fail on tuner installs (in one case on a Dell 9100 the tuners were there and disappeared and I had to run tv set-up again).

when it works, it's great. I could get you the log files if you'll tell we where they are. SD is great on the first machine there was a channel missing from the Spectrum LA line up and I told them and they had it corrected and added the next day.

Okay, so questions:

1) The first time WMC opened for you to do TV Setup, was that successful? It only took you 7 minutes to close WMC where I guess it said it failed to apply the tweak.
2) Do you have more than 4 tuners? What type of tuners?
3) What was WMC doing when it took 6 1/2 hours before you closed it?

Everything looks pretty normal for EPG123, but with WMC, if it has to create 9,999 merged channels with multiple tuners, it can take a long time. It will also take a long time for WMC to close the database after you close the window which would make it appear EPG123 did not recognize it closed. I've been able to "duplicate" this on a VM with multiple tuners but even then it still takes nowhere near 6 1/2 hours. More like 30 minutes.

Ok starting up I ran into tuner recognition problems. There are 24 turns on the system, 2 6tuner Ceton network and 4 HD 3 tuners each. On this machine I wanted to put on the second Ceton and one HD. I tried the tweak and it didn't work, I then opened the Ceton diag and cleared and discovered tuners but one Ceton (the one I wanted) was missing so I did it again eventually I discovered all 24 and then picked the ones I wanted and started tv set up for the next 5 hours (I think it was about 7:20 am to half hour past 12 noon.

I well could have given up on EPG123 since I didn't have any way of see that it was "working", with the tuners I had opened resource monitor and check ehshell and recvr. I had checked epg123 but it was only showing minisule activity. I had been fooled on the Lenovo laptop which started my observation of the running tasks. If I let it run and it went to screen saver and monitor off, coming back on MC would have a black screen and I didn't know if it had "stalled" or "quit" or it it was still running.

These machines have been "around" for a long time and have very large libraries of recorded TV shows most of which are protected (TWC started that and it has been maintained by Spectrum)

I guess it would have helped me if there was a progress or activity indicator. That might be a useful addition especially if I have to do this again.

BTW I didn't get the tuner tweak to work in EPG123 but the Ceton driver has that built in and after the second discovery I had all the tuners discovered but that apparently didn't inform EPG123.

The only other problem I've got right now is the permissions for the server file to the clients. Its only been a couple of days but I keep seeing "failed to start" but the manual update works. I went into the server on Dell 8700 i7 and didn't several additions including a "guest" and I'll see how that works tomorrow. But I do have the guides running and even with some fumbles on one machine I managed to recover the series recording log from the back-up file after I found it.

Holy cow! I thought I was crazy when I simulated 6 OTA tuners and 8 cable tuners for a total of 14! but 24! So the majority of the time was WMC scanning the tuners and building the merged channels?

The loading of all those merged channels into the client gui takes a bit of time. I believe I can significantly speed that up using virtual listviews, but I will seriously have to change a lot of code to do so. The listview on the right side for the lineups is virtual so I have a little experience there. In the mean time, a progress bar might not be a bad idea when populating it.

For the tuner limit tweak, EPG123 won't recognize the tweak done by Ceton because Ceton only does the limit increase for the US. EPG123 does it for as many countries as it can which is 30. When it checks to see if the tweak is present, it looks at all 30 countries and if any do not have it then it will fail.

For the task to access your shared folder, you will have to edit the task in Task Scheduler. Change the User to your account (or another account that has access to the share) and store the password with it when you click [OK].

EDIT: Oh now I remember. Virtual listviews can't handle checkboxes very well. I'll have to research if that has changed any.

The max tuners used on the HP was 9 (6 from the ceton and 3 from one HD Homerun) The max on the Dell 9100 is 12 which is four HD homeruns. I had no idea that the tuner increase was so different. Perhaps it would be possible to tweak or verify before starting client set-up? I didn't get any response to the button but then it was after I had started and was going into tv set-up and not finding the tuners. After two or three tries then it defaults back to four. When that happened on the Lenovo Win8.1 pro I just let it go that way and I think it finished in an hour and half I think.

Should the task be set to just use the host machine password and account?

I initially tweaked and verified at the beginning, but it would always pass the verification and then the tweak would be lost once the user started TV Setup occasionally. When a new database is created there is a lot going on and the tweak only sticks if whatever race condition is going on favors it. That is why I changed it to waiting until WMC closed to verify the tweak is still there and giving the user the opportunity to repeat Step 2 to try again.

The account for your task just needs to be one that can access the shared network folder. It can most certainly be the one that can successfully perform a Manual Import from the same shared network folder.

Okay, got a nice simple progress bar in the status toolstrip. It will only be visible while the merged channel listview (left side) is being populated and disappears when done to be replaced by what you see currently.

The update task worked on the Win 8.1pro Lenovo laptop but I cannot find it in the task library on the HP machine.....where is it and what's it called? Maybe it didn't get installed?

Did you update the download to add the progress bar?

In Task Scheduler, you should see the task epg123_update in the root folder 'Task Scheduler Library'. Also, if you open either EPG123 or EPG123 Client, the Scheduled Task panel should indicate whether a task exists or not.

Still working on the progress bar. I thought I was close to done last night, but starting putting it through some stress testing and it is not working I wanted. Hopefully complete that today.

I found it and it is scheduled but I think it might be missing or lost since in task scheduler it shows a location of "\" and all the buttons are greyed out on all the panes.

I looked in the program file and didn't see anything labeled as task so perhaps it only got installed on the win8.1 due to some permissions issue on the win 7 machines? But none of the win7 clients are working and just keep incrementing the clock to the next day. I have the machines staggered by half hour since it take some time to import the schedule. Two machines download but I'm only using the Dell8700 as a source. On the other machines I mapped "output" from the program data source so that it was an easy path to insert into the program and it works fine for a manual import so there really shouldn't be a permissions issue once I find the task....

Another install on top maybe as administrator? or?

No need to install again.

To edit the task in Task Scheduler, you need to either double-click it or select it and click the 'Properties' button on the right.

If you open the EPG123 configuration GUI, you will see the task and status like below:

Yah, if you look at 4AM when the task tried to run, it says the file does not exist. Instead of using your mapped drive path, use the UNC path. Mapping is done specifically when a user is logged in, so that may be the issue. I'd have to run some experiments to be sure.

I've got the progress bars working pretty well. Would you like to give it a spin to see if that helps show the client is not locked up?

Sure, right now I'm not looking to do any more TV Set-up here but I still have my friends that I have to take care of.

I just changed all the clients to the //server/ format so will see what happens tomorrow morning.

BTW is it normal that the "about guide" only shows up on the server machine and not any of the client machines?

No need to do another setup, the progress bars in the client is just for its' processes to populate the left side. With your slow machines and high channel count, this will give you a visible status that things are a happening.

I noticed recently that I broke that somewhere along the line. I'll get that fixed in the next release coming pretty soon. The clients will have an "About" as well. Thanks for reminding me!

It looks as if the path fix worked. Checked two machines and they both updated when asked and show ready for more.
