Thanks Gary, v1.6.1.2 did indeed run without exception. I don't quite understand the issues it is reporting. I haven't knowingly merged these channels. Most are channels that I have never had enabled.

Code: Select all

[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "250 : - 1D72 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "601 : BBC RB 1 - 1D73 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "794 : - 1D74 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "608 : - 1D75 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "261 : - 1D76 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "226 : - 1D77 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "263 : - 1D78 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "15 : - 1D79 = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
[23/01/2021 06:15:18] [ INFO] Failed to repair merged channel "14 : - 1D7A = { (PC:null) + [ ] }" with no tuning infos.
Of those, only 14, 15 & 601 are enabled and have a matching subscription. 261, 263 & 794 are present but disabled. All of these have tuning infos. 226, 250 & 608 are not listed at all. Interestingly, the hex IDs form a contiguous block.

By the way, the client GUI still opened up fine for me with v1.6.1.1.

I think DVB channels might be more susceptible to this and I am just overreporting. Next release will ignore any merged channels that have a null primary channel. When WMC finds a new channel, a merged channel is created for it and the scanned channel (tuner frequency/call sign/channel number) is assigned to the primary channel. If that scanned channel disappears, WMC will remove the scanned channel but evidently does not delete the merged channel... this is just a guess based on what you described.

WMC will ignore any merged channel that has an empty/null primary channel so they won't show up in the guide or the 'Edit Channels' pages. The reason you see the channels currently is they are different merged channels that have an active scanned channel assigned.

The merged channel IDs do suggest that they were all added to the database at the same time, so it was probably during the initial scan. Is it possible all these channels are on the same transponder/broadcast frequency?

It doesn't look like they share a common transponder or frequency. But the trouble with DVB is that Media Center will detect the same channel (albeit with low signal strength/quality) from other transmitters or from signal reflections etc. I guess this is where the channel merging comes in. I have four tuners which then multiplies the discovered frequency list by four. So in some cases I have channels with 24 sources, of which only 4 are the true frequency from my closest transmitter.

OK sorry if already answered - unable to find.

How to to get rid of annoying / nag-ware system tray icon?

I've obediently updated this thing twice in the last week from 1.3.x which was running fine here.

I just never ever want to see EPG in my system tray unless its on fire. It should just work in background and only speak when spoken to. ... why the change?

The tray notification icon arrived in v1.3.10.0. I run Media Center full screen 24/7 and still find it useful.

viewtopic.php?f=99&t=13163

Of course, if you turn it off, it won't then be able to tell you when it's on fire.

The tray notification was added in v1.3.10.0 so with prior versions it never existed. The only time the tray icon will notify you of anything is when it completes the scheduled update which would be 1 time a day, if you are logged in, and should only be visible for 10 seconds. It will also notify immediately if there was an error in the last update when you login to Windows, but only if it an error. I would hardly call this "nag" ware, but if you don't want the tray to ever run, you can open 'msconfig', select the 'Startup' tab, and uncheck 'epg123'. You will lose the ability to quickly open the configuration GUI, the client GUI, view the log file, and kick-off an update immediately, but you won't get that once-a-day "nag" giving you the status of your just finished guide update.

Yeah sry wrong choice of wording - definitely not nag ware!

Dumb question - right click > exit tray icon: does the guide still update?

I've installed epg123Setup_v1.6.1.2.zip and finally have it working satisfactory with WMC. But still have the following problems:
1, The setup still thinks I have 3 tuners when I only have 2 over the air HF ones.
2. One station with 6 sub channels will only install 1 channel. Denver, 80209, Ch # 9.4 :

EPG123 looks at the registry to see how many tuners you have/had, and how many are configured currently to give that message. If you had a separate tuner in the past but no longer use it, it can still be in the registry for WMC to give that indication. It is just a prompt to let users check to see if WMC is setup the way they want and doesn't affect anything else. You can ignore it.

7MC does not scan VHF channels and you will have to add that manually. The 9.4 you are picking up is a simulcast on a UHF channel. To get all the 9.x channels, take a look here.

You also might get a better signal for channel 7 by adding KMGH 7 as a VHF on RF 7 rather than the various lower power UHF repeaters.

As long as you have the scheduled task set up, your guide will update whether or not the tray icon is running.

Short answer -> Yes.

Just a small thing about the tray icon notification. I keep my HTPC asleep most of the time. It wakes up to do the EPG123 update then goes back to sleep if there are no recordings soon after it has completed the update.

If I then later manually wake up the HTPC, that notification about the successful EPG123 update is there (hours later). I'm not sure why, as the HTPC is set to go to sleep 2 minutes after it is told it is OK to go to sleep, and I have it set so that it is told to stay awake during the indexing that occurs afterwards, so there should be at least 2 (most likely more) minutes after EPG123 has completed the update before the PC goes to sleep again.

You would think the EPG123 tray notification would appear and then go away within that 2 minutes and not show up later then the PC is re-awoken, but for some reason it stays there. Perhaps this is due to the PC being in "away mode" (monitor is turned off) when it wakes up for the EPG123 update, so the tray waits until the monitor is "enabled" before displaying the message?

That has been my experience as well. When I leave Outlook open for the night, come back to the computer in the morning and wake the monitors (leave away mode), I get a deluge of notifications of the email I received in the last 6 hours.

I guess I should say the notification will last only 10 seconds while not in away mode.

It slightly more subtle than that. It waits until there is user activity on the desktop before it triggers. I run Media Center full screen 24/7. If I minimise Media Center after an evening’s viewing, the tray pops up telling me it updated earlier that morning.

All right, you all convinced me. There is now an option from the notification tray to "Notify on ERRORs only" and will default to 'true'.

Were we trying to convince you of something? :D

I feel this is a good option. My eyes are not getting any better and seeing that pop-up from across the room often makes me have to get closer to the TV to see if it is a problem or not. Now I can relax a bit more. Thanks.

Reminds me of this article on Wired.

Key paragraph being:

Code: Select all

But open source success, Thornton quickly found, has a dark side. He felt inundated. Countless people wrote him and Otto every week with bug reports, demands for new features, questions, praise.
I'm sure I don't have anywhere near the success as Thornton and Otto the article is about, but I can feel their pain.

I find the icon colour helps with that. ;)

Only if I've already put my glasses on. The pop-up goes away too fast for me to put them on in time, so hopping up and getting closer is the only chance I've got! I used to be able to see all distances with eyeglasses on, but now I can only see clearly about 1.5+ feet away with them. For anything less than 1.5 feet away, I need to take them off. I should probably get bifocals, but I'm not THAT old yet, dammit! :D
