Can’t record NFL Football due to identical program names

So, just starting using epg123, mostly working well with one exception.

NFL games appear in the guide In one of two formats, one specific and one generic:

Specific Version
Title: NFL Football
Description: Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans (as an example)

Generic Version
Title: NFL Football
Description: Football action from around the National League

When I try to record these games the first format always records properly as WMC recognizes it as a unique episode.

The second format is what is causing the problem. Whether I try to record using a series or individually, the recorder sees these listings as duplicates, will record the first one, but will not record additional programs as they ‘have already been recorded.”

I just tried to set up a series using the title option, but this just picks up the first format and totally ignores the second.

Any ideas?

It sounds like the generic flag isn't being added for sports. I'll have to check that in my software. I'll have a fix for next release.

How often do you run your updates? I'm curious why the game would be generic in the first place. Is this not live, but off of NFL Network?

Thanks for the quick reply. I run updates every day. I use an antenna and the listings are for OTA Burlington VT / Plattsburgh NY (local over the air 05672). The channels are CBS WCAX 3.1 and FOX WFFF 44.1.

Okay, I'll check it out. I dont get any generic games until 12/1 on my OTA lineup which will change to a specific game when it gets closer (and would then be scheduled to record). Is that the same for you?

It was switching to specific games as the date approached and the station finalized the lineup, but for the last three weeks or so it’s been staying generic all the way till game time.

Actually, couple more questions.

What version of EPG123 are you running?
What version were you running around 3 weeks ago?

I haven't actually checked yet, but I believe this is a flaw I introduced in 1.2.17 and fixed in 1.2.21. The problem was I wasn't identifying the generic games as a series, so it wasn't getting a generic flag. Without the generic flag, the real episode is getting ignored on import.

I'm sorry, but a fix is to click the [Rebuild WMC Database] in order to clear out the guide. You will then have to import the mxf file manually.

Tried the steps you suggested but no luck, but had some time so I just uninstalled and did a clean install. That seemed to have done the trick, all the games for this weekend have detailed specific info and all get picked up by a series recording. The further out games on 12/1 still show as generic, but I’m assuming that’s due to the networks not having decided which games to broadcast yet.

Anyway, thanks for your help and quick responses, I’ll keep an eye on it and if the problem reoccurs I’ll let you know,

Thanks!

Looks like the flaw is still there and when I fixed the first problem in v1.2.21, I created this one. I'll have it fixed in next release, though college football games that are TBA have me a little perplexed at the moment.

I just released version 1.2.23 to address this issue and a couple more. Let me know if those NFL games don't get updated, I'm hoping we can apply a generic flag after the program is already created.

Hi, updated the program and reran the listing update. Seems to be the same as my previous email, the nfl games for this weekend are shown with specific details and are each being picked up and scheduled to record, which is good, likewise the games for thanksgiving day are good. The games for the following weekend 12/1 are still generic and only the first one is picked up to record, the others are seen as identical programs and are skipped, with the exception of the Sunday night to game which is scheduled by the networks way in advance, those games are always shown with specifics.

Yah, figured that was going to happen. You need to clear out your guide and import the mxf file again.

Run epg123Client.exe as Administrator... click the [Rebuild WMC Database] and then import the epg123.mxf file. After that, it should show those generic games on 12/1 as being scheduled to record.

The problem is when those generic games were added to the guide, they didn't have the isGeneric flag set. WMC uses that flag as part of its logic on whether or not to accept a "new" program to replace it. Since it thinks the program is not generic, it takes priority. Clearing out the guide will solve this for you with the new data.
