Channels deleted in EPG123 Client keep reappearing

This is a problem that I have had since installation about a year ago but just getting round to fixing it now. In EPG123 Client on the left side of the screen are the Guide Channels. The channels that I do not want I delete. When I start WMC I see the same channels as in EPG123 Client but after a while a number of the deleted channels reappear in both EPG123 Client and WMC. Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to fix it?

Background scanning should have been disabled. What does the bottom of the client say concerning number of lineups?

I can't see anywhere to turn off background scanning in the client.

The bottom of the client on left side says "1 lineup 75 services with 75 shown"

I had/have the same problem with UK OTA DVB-T. Even with all background/opportunistic scanning disabled, Media Center will re-add discovered channels back into the line up. It does this through a channel announcement network discovery process that happens if you watch live TV (doesn’t happen when recording). It is not possible to stop this.

The best you can do is to enable the EPG123 Automatch feature and disable Autoadd. This will then disable these discovered channels next time EPG123 runs.

The background scanning is just a registry setting. Maybe your tuners turned it back on.

Rather than delete the channels, why not just disable them (uncheck)?

I have tried disabling them but they still come back into the WMC Guide - I then starting deleting them because I thought that might work better.

As you suggested, I have enabled the Automatch feature but can't find where to disable the Autoadd feature. Where can I find the control for this?

The "Automatically download new stations in lineups" option (historically referred to as the Autoadd option) is from the configuration GUI.

I have now made the changes you suggested. So now the extra channels are added in by WMC and then when EPG runs it takes them back out again.

Is this how it is for everyone?

Is there really no way to stop WMC adding the channels in?

Many thanks to you and IT Troll for your help so far

That is as good as I have got it. I think this channel announcement (mux discovery) feature is limited to certain OTA broadcast services; it is baked into the Freeview standard. If you have a traditional TV set, this is what causes the “new channels have been discovered, retune now” type messages.

I find that the channels are only discovered if I watch live TV. I mostly record and play later, so the unwanted channels don’t bug me that much. At least with this setup I know they will be gone the next day. This is a big improvement, before EPG123 I would have to periodically clear out the junk channels manually.

The other thing you can do is to create a list of favourite channels and then filter the guide to just view these favourites.

A few important things to understand on how EPG123 automatch works in this scenario...

If there is a channel that does not have any guide listings linked, and EPG123 did not download that channel's guide listings, it will disable that channel.
If there is a channel that does not have any guide listings linked, and EPG123 does download that channel's guide listings, it will subscribe the listings to the channel and enable it.
If there is a channel that already has guide listings linked, EPG123 will leave it alone... it will keep the current listings and its' enable/disable state.

I didn't realise that function existed in WMC, so I have just created my favourite lineup and that works very well, no more scrolling through loads of unwanted channels.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your explanation of how the logic works with the automatch feature.

Could you explain how the "Automatically download new stations in lineups" works? IT Troll suggested this should be disabled to assist in the prevention of the addition of unwanted channels into the guide.

EPG123 not only tracks what stations you selected to download, but also what channels you decided to NOT download. If a new station is added to your lineup which is not listed in either category, and 'Automatically download...' is enabled, then EPG123 will add it to the list to download. At this point, you now have the new channel in the generated guide listings.

If you have the 'Automatically match...' feature enabled, that means the newly added station will be matched with the tuner channel and the channel will be enabled in the guide. It will follow rule #2 above.
If there is a channel that does not have any guide listings linked, and EPG123 does download that channel's guide listings, it will subscribe the listings to the channel and enable it.
