Hangs at "Performing a Manual Database Update"

#1

Post by dochockey » Tue Jun 25, 2019 11:11 pm

I am getting stuck at Step one. It hangs with the message "Performing a Manual Database Update". I've tried turning WMC on and off, manually deleting ehome, uninstalling and reinstalling EPG123 and it still hangs at Step One. Suggestions?

The initial part of Step 1 can take some time depending on the state of your current database and any other WMC processes running. What step 1 does is forces an update (mcupdate.exe -manual -uf)... I think this might be holding things up a bit because it is trying to update guide information so will have to timout on the guide server. It then deletes the ehome folder, opens WMC, waits for a certain process to start which indicates that the initial database has been created, forces another update which shouldn't have to wait for a timeout, increases your tuner type limits from 4 to 32, and creates a backup of your current configuration.

If you don't care about all that and just want to get to the good stuff, open task manager and close the mcupdate tasks as they appear. That should allow you to get to step 2.

EDIT: I guess I should also note that if there are any mcupdate.exe processes running before starting Step 1, you should close them and then try. Multiple mcupdate threads can really slow things down as well.

Interesting. Evidently the problems with MS servers is affecting the manual update (mcupdate.exe -u -manual -nogc). I'm going to work on this a bit to see what I can do. I'll probably put a timeout on it so the process can proceed naturally.

hmmm... working now. Maybe it was my virtual machine. It no longer hangs for me.

Interesting. I've looked several times while trying to get it running and there has not been an mcupdate.exe file running at any point in task manager. Also, I have looked at ehome and there does not appear to have been any files deleted. Are just some deleted or is it everything in the folder?

If WMC demanded an update, which it will of course do if the guide is out of date, the mcupdate process will be from a service so you would have to enable viewing processes from all users.

EPG123 will delete all contents of the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\ehome folder but will also immediately open a new instance of WMC which will create a new database, so there will probably be a number of files and folders there. The mcepgX-Y.db file should be fairly small in size as it will be pretty much empty.

So, I have tried it again with no luck. It has been running for three hours in a loop at Step One with the message "Performing a Manual Database Update". This is on a fresh install of Windows 7. I uninstalled WMC and reinstalled it. I uninstalled EPG123 and reinstalled it. When I tried to manually delete the windows/ehome folder it gave a message that I needed permission from "TrustedInstaller", which is listed as the owner of the ehome folder. I changed permissions and ownership to give me access, but still, no luck installing EPG123. I've successfully installed it on other machines. Suggestions?

Here is the log......

I loaded version 1.2.9 after getting the same result with 1.2.13, hoping that maybe an older version would work, but I keep getting the same result.

What OS are you running? and just to verify you are looking at the ProgramData\Microsoft\ehome folder, right?

Deleting the windows\ehome folder removes WMC, without uninstalling. Don't do that.

Uninstall WMC, reboot, install WMC, you may have to reinstall your tuners to get the registry settings for WMC created. Open WMC momentarily just to be sure the programdata folder have been created. After all that is done, run epg123client.exe as administrator and start with step 1.

I followed all the above instructions and it is again in an endless loop. What is the longest that you have seen step one take to complete?

Since you're basically starting with nothing in your database, it should be at most a minute.

Sorry, been doing all these posts on the phone and just now have time to sit and read through everything you have done. I don't know what file the trace.log is talking about that epg123 can't find. The only thing going on there is it will open WMC and then hide it, use mcupdate.exe to update the database, and then restore WMC to view.

I would suggest at this point to just do things manually. Start at Step 2 and setup WMC. For Step 3, you will have to open the configuration GUI yourself to set it up. If you have any recordings to transfer over, click the [Transfer Tool] button to open it up and then open the backup ZIP file created the first time you start a Step 1.

Hi,

I am a recent convert to epg123, having been forced over the cliff by the latest Rovi issues with WMC. So far I am a very happy camper, as I am getting correct guide listings (and artwork!), and it appears to be stable one week in.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that epg123 not only updates the guide listing, but also allows you to change some WMC settings. However, I have a similar issues to this thread where epg123 Client hangs when trying to tweak/update WMC settings. The log shows

"[ERROR] Unhandled thread exception caught from epg123Client.exe. message: Access is denied"

I'm guessing this is a missing security setting somewhere. I looked at WMC which has all users with full permission. However c:\program data\microsoft\ehome and c:\program data\GaRyan2 have limited access for some users. Any suggestions as to what is the cause of the error?

Thx.

This reminds me of something. Do you now, or have you in the past, used MCE Reset Toolbox? They do a terrible thing with the GAC that breaks the ability for EPG123 to make those tweaks safely and properly. The only way to get things working again is to uninstall WMC, reboot, and reinstall WMC. Open WMC to make sure everything is still okay, and then try the Tweak again.
