EPG123 doesn't launch - just crashes

Hi All,

I just experienced a guide outage on my WMC, and tried a bunch of things which culminated in me uninstalling and reinstalling WMC. Needless to say - still no guide data.

So then I *tried* to install EPG123. (Well, it *says* it installed...) but when I tried to run the client, nothing happens. (No launch, no crash, no errors, no error log... not even a GaRyan2 directory in ProgramData.)

Any ideas on what's going on?

Thanks -

- Mike

For a test, download the portable install and unzip into a temporary location. Right-click the epg123.exe file and run as administrator.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for joining me here. I tried that. Same results - run it (as admin,) and nothing comes up: no errors, and it still doesn't create a GaRyan2 directory in the ProgramData folder.

I'm running WMC currently (to watch tv; is that causing the failure?)

Info on my system:

Windows 7 Ultimate, Core i7 7700k 4.2GHz cpu, 16GB, 64bit OS, running Service Pack 1.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2.

No, that won't cause a failure. When running epg123 outside the Program Files folders, the trace.log file will be created in the location of epg123.exe. Is there a trace.log file there? If there is no trace.log file, a lot of the same information will be in the event viewer under 'Applications and Services Logs\Media Center'.

Do you have any AV software running that may be blocking it?

Still no trace.log in my Desktop\EPG123\ directory. I DO have Norton AntiVirus running, but I have most things disabled while I was working on getting my WMC back up and running. But yes - it's running.

Ok - I was able to look up the Event Viewer, but (despite me doing a few tests since about 11:40pm, and it's currently 12:20am on the East Coast,) my last entry in the Event Viewer (for Media Center) was at 11:22:08pm.

The source of entries in the event viewer would be 'EPG123' or 'epg123Client', depending on which program was executed. This pretty much confirms that something is not allowing epg123 to start... pretty much the first thing it does is start an event entry.

EPG123 will place entries in the \Media Center folder above that branch and the source will be EPG123 or epg123Client.

... And I first ran EPG123 on my system at 10:51:42PM. (per my earliest crash report.) It's reporting that there's a System.BadImageFormatException error?

I've never encountered a kernelbase.dll error before, so I'm doing some research. So far I've found a corrupted user profile, or my target build is for some reason not working on a 64-bit OS with NativeHelpers.

BadImageFormatException, from what I've gathered so far, is not related to an actual picture image, but the file image.

Ok. I'm going to call it a night - you should too. :) I **REALLY** appreciate everything you've helped me with tonight already, and maybe we can look at this again tomorrow, or at some point in the coming weeks/months. Definitely a head-scratcher.

Thanks again for all of the assists!!!!

Well, it took a while, but I setup a virtual Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit machine with .NET 4.5.2 and then installed EPG123. It ran without issue.

Is there something special about your .NET install, or maybe something wrong with it? Any issues with any other programs? Maybe run a repair on the .NET installation (Control Panel->Programs and Features->Uninstall/Change and select the Repair option)?

Perhaps also a run of:

sfc /scannow

would be appropriate?

@Gary: I did the repair of .NET and did a reboot, but I'm still getting the crash. I *DID* get an error this time around:
