"Ghost" channels for OTA lineup and the [-1] crash

Hi. I have a few issues. Things were going well until about two weeks ago. I noticed that WMC stopped scheduling new programs to record in series that have been recording fine. I went into two of the series settings, changed them from "New" to "New and rerun." WMC then showed the upcoming episodes in the list of upcoming recordings. I changed it back from "New and rerun" to "New," and WMC still showed those upcoming episodes.

So, I figured it was time to upgrade from EPG123 1.1.19 to 1.2.1, so I did.

When I ran the client, I noticed these "ghost" twin station entries for stations in the OTA lineup. One has tuning info; the other doesn't. Here's a screenshot. (I've included the log below. I don't know why the log talks about MergedChannels because I haven't merged any channel listings in WMC.)



I'm not sure if these are causing the issue or not, but I thought I should include it here, just in case. The stations that have the programs that weren't scheduled to be recorded aren't in the OTA Lineup.

Also, while messing around with my channels, I got the ListViewItemCollection[-1] ArgumentOutOfRangeException a few times. (Stack trace below.) I've found some odd, seemingly random occasions when list controls appear to have a selected item even though they don't. I can't explain it, but you might want to guard against it nonetheless.

Okay, it looks to me you still have MS/Rovi in your database. The 18 lineups with 8,988 services and only 792 merged channels is a giveaway. I suspect that you got an update pushed to you for your region that "reset" your ATSC, and possibly your cable channels which would be why you have OTA channels that have no tuners associated with them. I don't think this could have been the reason for the failed recordings, but maybe. This is why I state in the guide:

Though EPG123 has demonstrated the capability to coexist with Microsoft/Rovi guide data, it is nonetheless recommended to begin with a clean start by performing Step 1. The existence of the Rovi data has the potential to override the guide data (low risk) as well as cause channels to completely disappear (medium risk). The data also introduces some strange behavior in the Movie Guide and category searches.

To clean up your current situation, I would simply delete the channels that have no tuners (empty TuningInfo).

For the failed recordings, were there errors in the trace.log file? It may have been that the client was failing during/after import and never kicked off a reindexing of the database to update the scheduled recordings. This is supported by the fact that you just had to change something and save it again that the future recordings were then scheduled. WMC will reindex a series recording when you save the request.

Actually, the timing is right if the MS/Rovi crap was pushed to you about 2 weeks ago and you were no longer reindexing your scheduled recordings. You already had 2 weeks worth of recordings scheduled and they would have just recently completed. With no new indexing, no new recordings after that.

It seemed to index correctly since searches for shows were successful and it says there are 20 days of listings. I get a notification for any EPG123 Warning or Error event log entry, and I received none. I did a quick scan of the trace.log file before and didn't see any, but I'll check it again more carefully, just in case.

When I delete a channel without TuningInfo, the client deletes both of them. I presume they'll come back on the next update. I'll nuke all of them.

It's difficult to remember for sure, since I've been using EPG123 since it started, which was--what--two years ago? But, if memory serves, I didn't want to reset WMC from scratch and lose all my scheduled recordings, so I started the guide setup again, declined the TOS, and--for good measure--disabled the automatic download. So, yes, it's likely there are old lineups in there. (18 sounds a bit steep since there aren't even that many available in my area, but who knows what Rovi did.) Perhaps now with the improved EPG123 setup and the transfer tool, I can finally do a totally clean setup and not worry about it.

Perhaps, instead of Rovi pushing an update, SIliconDust's HDHomeRun CONNECT Duo did one. I checked the CONNECT's log:

Interesting coincidence in the log. But July 5 was the last scheduled series recording that was made before it "forgot" about the upcoming one on July 10, so that's probably not it.

I'll spare you the details of all my fiddling. Basically, EPG123 stopped reindexing after 3 May 2018. It's weird that WMC still kept displaying and recording new shows as they came up... until a few days ago.

In the client, I deleted the stations without TuningInfo. When I restarted the client, they came back like this.



In the client, I deleted all the OTA stations.
In WMC, I did a Settings > TV > Scan > Delete All. Then I had WMC scan for channels.
Oddly, there are still a few channels in the EPG123 OTA lineup.



I ran an EPG123 update again. It still has "no tuners" and "MergedChannel" errors and didn't start a reindex. I started a reindex manually, and it worked fine.

Can EPG123 start a reindex even though it detects some auto-match irregularities? In my situation anyway, I don't think I care about the irregularities as much as I do getting a reindex.

Perhaps it's time to reset WMC. I just don't want to have to reconfigure everything again (default recording settings, MCL, etc.).

Don't understand why those channels are not being deleted. Even the [Delete All] in WMC didn't take care of it which I thought would be a sure thing.

I just sent you a message asking to send me your backup files so I can recreate your setup here. I need to see what is different about these channels than anything I've seen before.

Well, that was interesting ... don't know if I learned anything. I did a restore of your backup on a virtual machine here and I don't see any duplicate stations. It did repair 2 channels, 7.3 and 26.3, but other than that there were no issues.

If you still have duplicate/ghost channels, it looks like a database rebuild will take care of them. At that point, though, you might as well start at Step 1. The difference between a database rebuild and a Step 1 setup is with Step 1 you will lose your favorite lineups. Both will lose your recording histories for the new and repeat recordings.

EDIT: Okay, it looks like your media center database crashed and WMC performed recovery (mcupdate.exe -MediaCenterRecoveryTask) which is basically the same as a database rebuild by EPG123. That is why I didn't see anything exciting over here.

FWIW, those unmatched channels were successfully automatched after I ran an EPG123 update. Yup, looks good for now. (Although that pesky index==-1 crash still happens sometimes when I try to automatch.)

I'll probably do a Step 1 setup in the next week or so to clean out the Rovi dreck once and for all. it's certainly not helping me. As long as I don't lose my settings and I can restore my scheduled recordings with the EPG123 transfer tool, it should be a breeze. (EPG123 means I no longer have to painstakingly re-edit my channel list in WMC to disable all the CableCARD channels I don't receive.)
