Schedules Direct UK Freesat Data only 8 days?

#1

Post by camelopardis » Thu Jul 21, 2016 12:36 pm

I've just migrated to EPG123 and am very pleased - in general much better than the old MS data. I have DVB-S2 tuners and set it up with the SD UK Freesat (England) listings. I laboriously did several transponder scans to pick up all the new channels (becuase MS's setup is so outdated!) and renumbered my channels (I prefer BBC1 HD to be Channel 1, etc). However I made the mistake of choosing the automap option in EPG123 which ended up making rather a dogs breakfast of my changes the next time it ran! After turning it off and renumbering etc, everything worked fine next time around :)

However, I notice that there's only about 8 days worth of data on all channels (before it just says "to be announced") - is this normal for the SD Freesat data or am I missing something?

I am seeing the same with UK Freeview data and so asked the question to SD support. I got a very fast response which said that they do a bulk update on a Thursday which adds in another 7 days. So I guess it gradually ticks down and then jumps back up again.

Personally I would prefer a rolling daily update which keeps the EPG topped up to 14 days like the MS service did in the good old days. But I guess it depends how their upstream provides the feed.

I just ran an update and some channels have indeed now filled out; e.g. BBC1, ITV, CH5

But other are still have "To be announced" placeholders; e.g. BBC2, CH4, BBC4

Perhaps they will come tomorrow.

So most the channels have now filled out now. BBC4 is still lagging behind though on 8 days.

What's the stationID that you're using for BBC4?

You should see an update in the next 12 hours or so.

Yes, BBC4 has now filled out.

Is there a way these channels can be put on a daily rolling update rather than a weekly bulk update?

I will ask our upstream, but the answer up until now has been that they only get the schedules on Thursday.

Thanks that would be appreciated. Normally a week and a bit is plenty, but if you are away for a couple of weeks it is great to be able to schedule recordings further in advance. Do all the UK channels currently come in on a Thursday? Or do different channels come in on different days; like BBC4 did today?

I believe that different broadcasters have different schedules regarding updates sent to our upstream; you wouldn't know better than I would!

This question has come up again in another thread. Did you get anything back from your upstream?

The MS feed (when working) gives a rolling 14 day EPG for all UK channels. I think new EPG123/SD users are expecting the same rather than the ebb and flow of weekly batch updates.

^ Not sure the data clumps Gracenote gets for the UK but can you set EPG for 21 days giving you the two full weeks?

If we understood rkulagow from before, the updates to the guide are 14 days worth, but are only updated 1 day a week. This means the listings for the channels will shrink to only 7 days and upon update will go back up to 14 days.

That is quite a major limitation if, like me, you are about to go away for a couple of weeks and only have a 7 day guide with which to work. Series recordings will hopefully populate properly in my absence, but for one-off programmes I will have to do a 'manual recording', inserting channel numbers and times. This is even more frustrating when my WMC will not accept channel numbers above 99 in the manual recording menu!

It's a bit messy, but you could add the Freeview line up and match that data for the channels that exist....

Apologies, I didn't see the earlier comments about Freeview data being the same!

It seems like a pretty poor setup really.

Do sudden schedule changes get pushed through in between weekly uploads?
