Reasons NOT to Upgrade to Windows 10

#1

Post by Scallica » Tue Jul 28, 2015 2:02 pm

"Windows 10 is just about here—and many users (especially those who have been wrestling with Windows 8) are probably eager to upgrade. But even if you can get it now—the upgrade will be sent first to those who signed up for the Windows Insider beta program and then in “slow waves” to everyone else—you may want to hold off. Here are nine reasons you might want to put off a Windows 10 upgrade."

Ahhh reason number 8:
"The truth is, Media Center was always a nightmare to set up and has been superseded by streaming media services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Spotify, Apple Music and many others. Still, there are die-hards out there who love it—and who will be dismayed to learn that Windows Media Center won’t work with Windows 10. If you’re one of that group, stay away from upgrading. "

Actually only takes a couple clicks. What am I missing?

There is something up with windows 10. The solitaire is going to cost $1.99 a MONTH to remove adds! So if that's for the card game; what else is coming down the pike. I smell trouble no matter how you slice it. Also why haven't MSDN\TechNet users gotten these bits yet in an ISO?

Hmm... I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Spotify, etc., yet none of them record and play back protected cable TV. What am I missing?

I think whoever wrote that article was a moron.

While this is a great community that I enjoy a great deal, the reality of the situation is that "7000 users" is basically "no one" when you're talking about the Windows install-base. Blow 'em up all you want, but our little niche is still a little niche.

If you asked MS how many windows users they have, 7000 probably fits within the margin of error.

Way to move the goal posts. The issue brought up wasn't that Windows 10 has bugs. The issue is that it is loaded with bugs. That's actually a pretty good reason not to upgrade to something.... especially at launch.

^ are you claiming that Windows 10 doesn't have a lot of bugs, or are you just claiming that it's prudent to upgrade to Windows 10, bugs be damned?

I'm hoping neither because I would be inclined to think that anyone that believed either of those was a fool.

Then why roll your eyes at someone who claims that the bugs in Windows 10 are a reason not to upgrade? Somebody here is trolling, and it isn't me.

I'd go so far as to say that for 99% of the populace, there is no compelling reason to upgrade to Windows 10 today.

Sure, plenty want it but most don't need it. The big reason most of the "but I have to have it" crowd gives is gaming, specifically DX12 games, but to the best of my knowledge there aren't many (if any) available currently. Fixed start menu for Win8 users? I'd venture a guess that most that weren't happy with the Win8 interface have already installed replacements anyway.

Considering all of the tangible downsides to upgrading right now, I find it hilarious that so many people are jumping on the bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for everyone doing what they want, I just think it's much more prudent for most people to wait a while, let all of the kinks get worked out, and their DX12 games to actually hit the market before they jump down the rabbit hole.

There is a reason most IT departments usually wait until SP1 of a new OS is released before they consider upgrading.

And of course, IT stays away from many Windows versions. Vista? nah. 2000? nah. 8? nah. Etc, etc.

10 is attractive enough to move people from XP, though...
