Steps to take before and after allowing win10/11 to update?

I have searched so apologize if I missed this.
Has anyone documented the detailed steps to take when allowing a win10/11 system with 8.8.5 installed to update?
Currently running on one PC with win7 and will eventually move to a different, newer, PC running win10/11 with 8.8.5 installed.
I plan to have one of the update stoppers installed so I can choose when and how to update. Want to know the steps I should take when it has been indicated that an update is safe for WMC.
Expect to:
Create restore point
copy/backup WMC config (what steps?)
Uninstall WMC (what step(s) does this actually entail?)
Anything else here?
Do win update
Reinstall WMC (what step(s) to not lose config?)
Restore/copy back config (what steps?)
Anything else?
restart windows update stopper
Or is it not possible to retain config when uninstalling/reinstalling?
If this is already all documented somewhere please provide a link and this thread can be deleted.
Thanks much for any guidance!
