Is there something that would stream WMC?

I'm looking for a wmc program that will use the wmc backend and stream LIVE tv to other computers/roku/chromcast etc???

I know there are media extenders (I used xbox), but can it be sent outside the home somehow? I want to share my live tv stream with my parents they can't afford cable

Install ServerWMC, Media Browser, and the ServerWMC plugin for Media Browser. Your parents can view your channel guide and live TV through a web browser. I set this up and it works great. In the ServerWMC plugin settings, I had to set the stream quality to 480i, but the video quality is certainly watchable.

Well, I think this would be stealing to allow for another household to get cable TV without paying for it.

But as an academic discussion, couldn't one set up a VPN server for the local network, have the remote client connect via router based VPN, and then use an extender as normal?

Well maybe it is but my parents are 70 years old and they can't afford cable TV ans I was trying to do them a favor.

Well... I say Slingbox is your best bet. It's probably the easiest solution of all available but even that might be a bit over their heads depending on how technical they are. To use Roku with Slingbox you need a smartphone or tablet to start the stream them transfer the stream to the Roku retaining the controls on the tablet or smartphone.

Sling also connects right to a tv, so no technical difficulties at all. Just get an old Sling Catcher.

Code: Select all

SlingPlayer for Roku is a feature that teams up your Slingbox and SlingPlayer for iPhone, SlingPlayer for iPad, SlingPlayer for Android Phones, or SlingPlayer for Android Tablets with your Roku streaming player. With SlingPlayer on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet, you can stream your TV programs to the Roku player, and onto your TV. Just make sure that you've got a SlingTV/Slingbox 500, Slingbox M1, Slingbox 350, Slingbox PRO-HD, or Slingbox SOLO, as well as the latest version of SlingPlayer for your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet. Then download the SlingPlayer app for your Roku player, and you'll be all set to go.
Ugh, that sounds like a pain in the you know what. Forget I suggested it.

The only downside (well one of a few) is that the SlingCatcher is only compatible with Slingbox up through the ProHD. Nothing after that. The only other solution is the WD TV. It had the SlingPlayer app available for free and it worked as a stand alone unit.

I have to say at first the Roku solution really bugged me. But after using it for a couple of years now I've grown to appreciate it. It's nice to have the controls and an on screen guide you can scroll through on the iOS or Android device while not intruding on the program currently playing.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions folks. I will talk to them and see if they want to do this. My dad is the technical guy so maybe he will be ok.

Well to stream they have internet connection, so you could setup IPTV with Simple TV

You can get many channels, it is a bit of work get it setup with the channels you like.

or you get the IPTV channel in Plex and get the channel list from here

Set up two DD-WRT routers in the tunnel mode, one at your place, one at your parents. Install a WMC extender at your parent, it will "think" that it is at your house.

Make sure your upload connection can support the s bandwidth. FiOS basic tier had 35 Mbps (advertized at 25 Mbps). You need at least 20 Mbps per HD channel.
