The test build is up 1.0.7. Add the following line to the settings file (using of course your path to the recorded tv folder on the remote pc, include double backslashes).

<recordedtvlocation>\\mediacenter-pc\\users\\Public\\Recorded TV\\</recordedtvlocation>

Let me know the results. If you have problems please provide the log.
Hi. Wow! that was quick.

I've only just seen your post. It's a bit late tonight, nearly 11PM here but I'll definitely try it out tomorrow evening.
What is the path and filename for the settings file, and what log file do you require please?

Thanks and regards, Allen.
The path for the log and settings file is c:\programdata\shared guide server. Only two files in there.

It installs fine but when i try to open the shared guide it seems to work for a few seconds then windows tells me that the media center extensibility host has stopped working then a few seconds later MC tells me that the shared guide program has stopped responding and i'll be returned to MC. The funny thing is it seems to be working fine, in the couple of seconds i get i am able to navigate the guide and even look at program details. viewing the schedule recordings on the remote PC also works fine.

I had a look in the event log but i can't find anything which seems to specifically refer to this. any help gratefully received! thanks,
Can you post up the log? It is stored in c:\programdata\shared guide server. I'm afraid with that error there might not be any info, but we can hope. Also, please tell me about you system. Windows 7 32 bit or 64 bit. What version of Remote Potato?
no, there's nothing in the log i'm afraid. its win 7 32 bit with RP Server on a 64bit HTPC. i'm using RP Server v1.05.

Hmmm. There should definitely be something in the log if you are getting into the guide for a minute. The log overwrites itself after each run, so try launching the app again and look right away and see. If not I suspect we have a 32 bit compatibility issue. I don't have a test 32 bit box, and haven't hear of any users using 32 bit as of yet. See if you can get a log produced. I'll build myselft a 32 bit test machine in the meantime.

Hi.

I've been testing V1.08.

I have found a few bugs.

It's getting late again and I'm starting to confuse myself so I've summarised my testing tonight and will have another go tomorrow. I think my primary issue is that the <recordedtvlocation> is incorrectly set. There are other issues as well, the first one being the main stumbling block.

1. The first time I selected the currently showing program for a channel that has no tuner in the "extender" pc I had a recording initiated on the Host. The record symbol showed up on the shared Guide. I then got the circular wait animation followed several seconds later by "Error attempting to start Live TV" or similar. I tried to repeat this to capture the log file but it behaved differently for several repeated attempts even after restarting media centre. I think the failure to automatically start playback is due to me incorrectly specifying the <recordedtvlocation> because I am seeing "Network path not found" errors in the log. My Host pcname is Allen_Win7.
See Log1 below
Is the path below correct? I followed your example. Are the capitalisations correct? Does it need "Libraries" ie Public\\Libraries\\ are all the \\'s correct?
<recordedtvlocation>Allen_Win7\\users\\Public\\Recorded TV\\</recordedtvlocation>

If I manually start playback of the recording started above I get the same error you do a short time into the program when playback catches up with the time that the playback started.
Is there any way of fooling media centre that the recording is longer? ,(You can work out how long the recording should be from the guide data), or to regularly refresh the information that media centre is using to determine the length/end of the recording so that playback can continue? The progress bar only shows the first fraction of the program up to the point where playback started. Can you fool media centre with the info it needs to display this the same way it does on a real tuner IE with program start and end times and recording start point and progress?

2. When trying to replicate 1. I got the wait animation followed by the message "Recording Failed an unknown error occurred" It is the same error I get if I try and initiate a second recording while the tuner is still busy recording the first one.
I'm pretty sure I had already stopped and deleted the first recording.

3. If I have the shared guide set to show only my 10 favourites it works. If I change the shared guide to show all channels and scroll up and down I can scroll for several steps and then get an error "Invalid application Failed to launch "Shared Guide Client" " . This may help diagnosis: My full list of channels are not contiguous. I have gaps in my channel list 1-16 are used then 21-24 etc. The problem seems to occur when I scroll up or down beyond ch16. When I have my favourites selected 1,2,3,4,6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 it works fine. See Log2 Below

4. Using a mouse to select favourites out of the favourites list or the scheduled recordings list is painful. The lists scrolls with mouse movement making it very hard to mouse over the select boxes.

Three log files are below.

Regards Allen.

Quick reply

<recordedtvlocation>\\Allen_Win7\\users\\Public\\Recorded TV\\</recordedtvlocation>

You just missed a couple backslashes at the beginning. I'll look into your other issues later...

Here's the rest of the answers...

1. Answer is above. Rest assurred if this ends up working I will code in the algorithm for the server to figure it out on it's own so we don't have these type of issues.
2. This is a remote potato error that the server is throwing, so there isn't anything I can do about that unfortunately. Maybe we can check with Carlos to see what causes that error if it continues.
3. I think I have fixed this bug for you. Let me know once 1.0.9 gets posted. A week or so.
4. I realize the scrollers are crappy, I just haven't gotten around to fixes. I requires a bit of work to add the buttons for mouse scrolling once I turn the autoscroll off. I'll plan on having that fixed for version 1.0.9.

As far as the whole live tv scenario goes, we'll have to see. There doesn't seem to be a good way to update the duration of the file or specify a duration other that what is in the original metadata. Maybe I can figure out how MC plays live tv and replicate, but I'm guessing it uses some methods they don't expose to us as 3rd party developers. I'll keep ticking away to see if we can get this going.

Thanks for all the testing!

No Problem, Thanks for all your development.

I must be missing something though. I can't get rid of the "Network path not found" error.
My Recorded TV folder is on my Allen_Win7 pc on D drive. I have the recorded TV folder added to the Recorded TV library in media centre on the slave PC and it shows as \\Allen_Win7\Recorded TV

The Recorded TV folder isn't however listed under My Computer on the slave PC under the Homegroup/ALLEN_WIN7 folders, only Music, Videos, Pictures. (interesting, My PC name is all caps here?)
It is listed under the Network (workgroup) as ALLEN_WIN7\Recorded TV

I have tried \\ALLEN_WIN7\\Users\\Public\\Recorded TV\\
\\Allen_Win7\\Users\\Public\\Recorded TV\\
\\ALLEN_WIN7\\Users\\Public\\Libraries\\Recorded TV\\
\\Allen_Win7\\Users\\Public\\Libraries\\Recorded TV\\
\\ALLEN_WIN7\\Recorded TV\\
\\Allen_Win7\\Recorded TV\\
\\ALLEN_WIN7\\Recorded TV\
\\ALLEN_WIN7\\Recorded TV

Do I need to add the Recorded TV to the Homegroup somehow even though media centre can already see it via the workgroup? Can I put the full path in here to the folder on ALLEN_WIN7 D:\Recorded TV ? How do I include the drive letter in the path for the xml file? I'll do some googling but it may be obvious to you whats wrong here?

EDIT: I shared D:\Recorded TV to the homegroup on the host PC. It now shows up in the homegroup on the slave PC. Still no joy with getting the path recognised by the add-in ???
If I copy and paste the path from My computer to notepad on the slave PC it says \\ALLEN_WIN7\Recorded TV

Regards Allen.

Hi again.

Can I provide some more feedback please? I'm nit picking here. The following would be nice to have one day...

On my 720P projector the channel names in the Shared EPG are quite hard to read particularly in the smaller font. When using 10 lines/7 columns they appear to be the same shade of grey as the "<" arrows and are quite dull. In the native guide the shade of grey appears to be somewhere between the program title and the "<" arrow. I think it is subjectively duller grey on the shared guide as a result of the smaller font size? It is OK at 720P on My 40" TV which is brighter than the projector.

It would be easier to read for me on the projector if the Channel font was a little larger and/or slightly lighter in colour. The program names are good. Some of the character tails y, g etc do get chopped off in the 11 & 12 line grids, The program names appear to sit a little lower on the grid than the channel names in the 11 & 12 line grids. If the program name text was raised a couple of points the tails may fit? This is at 720P I havn't tried 1080 it may be OK?

Also It would be good if the Date and Times could not shrink quite so much when showing more rows. They get quite small at 10 rows. There appears to be room for a larger font in the larger grids?

Regards Allen

Allen, try this:

\\\\ALLEN_WIN7\\Users\\Public\\Recorded TV\\

Note i added two more slashes to the front. I suspect it is a code thing where the first four slahses will be interpretted by the code as two which would be correct.

Hello Allen,

I think we are having a couple of problems currently. My algorithm (as a beta test) pulls the first recorded tv folder listed in the folders of Remote Potato. It locates the file from there. Once it does that it goes to try and play the file in the location specified on the xml. I think in your case the first folder in remote potato is c:\users\public\recorded tv, where there won't be any recordings to find, and thus it won't work. If you want to test that theory, you can change your recorded tv folder for testing purposes. I have corrected this issue in the next version and I think I will just look for the recording in whatever folder is specified in the settings xml. Hopefully this makes sense.

Feedback is always welcome. I can change the color of the channel names, honestly I hadn't really noticed as I use my channel logos and don't see the names. See my screenshot.

As far as not shrinking the date and times as much, that will not be possible (at 12 rows). I've got the screen maxed out. If you need bigger fonts there you will have to choose less rows. I may be able to increase the font at 10 rows slightly, as this is the point at which it switches to a smaller font. I currently have two font sizes, and could add a 3rd, I'll see what I can do.

No problem. Now that I've used a a bit it the cinema with the lights out it is OK. What are you using for Channel Logos? the actual "My Channel Logos"? Is that required on the Host PC , the Slave PC or both?

Even with less than 10 rows I think the Date/Time font is smaller than the native guide?
The Date/Time are readable on the projector or monitor, but are pretty hard to read on a 40" TV from across the lounge. The nice thing about the native media centre UI is that it is optimised for viewing on a TV from the couch. You could shrink or relocate your "Shared Guide Display" title ;) It is partially obscured with the windows minimise/maximize/close gadgets when using the mouse.

I'm really enjoying using the add-in by the way :)

Logos - I use the actual My Channel Logos. It needs to be installed on each PC you plan to use it on, in the same location (C:\ drive for example) on each computer.
Note: I did increase the font size of the channels in the next version

Date/Time - Font size has been increased in the next version.

The next version should be out in a week or so. I need to spend a bit more time working on the live tv before I release it, to see if I can get it working.

Hello,

I'm a big fan from remote potato and now a fan from that addin, too.
I'm from Germany, within a EPG in German language. The problem is, that german has specially letters (äÄöÖüÜß) and that letters will be incorrect designed in the addin.

I wish me :-) and I hope that you be able to upgrade with a german-part.

Hello Mark,

thanks for you answer.
But, I don't know what you really need from me. :oops:

I've pinned a screenshot on it and ask you.
Need you a matching between the german-letter and the special-symbol?
A example:

Code: Select all

 Ä -> Ä
 ö -> ö
 Ö -> Ö
 ü -> ü
 Ü -> Ãœ
 ß -> ß
Bye
