I am currently using a Xbox 360 as an extender that has an old original Microsoft IR receiver connected to it. It does exactly what I want, which is power on the Xbox 360 from the remote.
Will be getting another Xbox 360 to use as an extender but finding the original Microsoft IR receiver with remote at a decent price is harder to find than say a HP or Dell one.
Does anyone know if the HP or Dell IR Receivers will power on the Xbox 360 from the remote? Or will I have to find an original Microsoft one?
IR Receiver that Powers on Xbox 360?

I'm confused. My XBox 360 (Slim) is operated from my remote, including power on/off. Your 360 doesn't take power on/off commands by itself?
Right now I have this remote:

Also, free refurb XBox 360 from Gamestop:

Thanks for the reply. That is actually the 360 deal I got to get the console for basically tax.
Was not aware that the official remote did that without an IR receiver.
Originally set this up about 5 years ago with some Media Center parts I had lying around from a HTPC build. Figured you needed the IR receiver but thanks for the info that all you need is the official 360 remote.

Frankly, any remote that knows about the WMC commands will work.
LOTS of universal remotes handle this. And there are plenty of 3rd party WMC remotes out there still on the shelves.

That's great. Tried an old Media Center remote I had and it worked with no IR receiver. When I first setup the Xbox figured it needed the receiver like all the HTPCs I had.
Thanks for the info!
