DMA2100 performance problems

#1

Post by steveeb » Fri Jan 29, 2021 10:31 am

Hello all,

A bit of a longshot here but maybe someone is able to help?

I still use a HTPC with Win7 Media Center for recording & playback of TV and the HTPC still works fine, HTPC spec is :
Lenovo M700 Core i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB SSD

I can watch live or recorded TV on the HTPC's monitor no problem.

I also have two DMA2100 extenders which work ok, but randomly they first get stuttering audio followed by pixelation in the video. If I use the remote to skip backwards 5 seconds it fixes the audio and video and all is well for the next 10mins or so but it's annoying to have to keep doing this whilst watching TV. Very occasionally they also get a black screen and I have to power off and on the DMA2100.

I have one recorded TV show which I can use to replicate the issue every time. No matter where in the show I start viewing it will work fine for around six minutes before the audio stuttering starts so I'm pretty sure it's not the recording that is at fault especially since I can view it on the HTPC monitor without seeing any issue.

The DMA2100s are using wired Ethernet via Powerline adapters, but I have tried connecting one of the DMA2100s directly to the HTPC ethernet port using a two meter LAN cable and I see the exact same problem. I've also tried adding a new pcie Ethernet adapter but the same problem persists.

Has anyone ever had the DMA2100 working via Ethernet without issues?

Hope someone can help

Thanks

I watch on three different dma2100’s all the time with no problems. Unfortunately that also means I really don’t have much troubleshooting experience with a problem similar to yours. Mine are all connected using Ethernet. I’ve used WiFi (5ghz only - don’t try 2.4) and it worked ok. My experience with powerline adapters and the dma’s is not good. WiFi worked better.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried the DMA2100 via Wifi today - experienced exactly the same issue unfortunately.

Well my first instinct is that it’s in your computer setup since it happens across all types of connections (even direct). If it ever worked correctly I’d try rolling back updates to the day before. Maybe google updates that interfere with Media Center (especially extenders) and uninstall those. Other things I’d try - 1. Open TaskManager and stop all processes that aren’t necessary. 2. Open MSConfig - google all services checked to run and disable as many as possible. Same with the startup tab. I would launch and try for the error after #1 and then again after #2. Good luck!

Just out of interest - if I uploaded to my OneDrive account the wtv recording that I use to troubleshoot this issue - would you be able to test it on your setup to see if you get the same problem?

Maybe its the recording?

For anyone else who's struggling with the same problem I have discovered the root cause - it is definitely network related.

The WMC streams to the DMA2100 over tcp ports 5004 and 49152. I downloaded NetLimiter software and limited the network throughput to the DMA2100 on port 49152 to 200KB/sec and it solved the problem and I was able to watch the recorded TV programme without issue.

Unfortunately, this bandwidth limit is too low for Live TV to work :-(
