Ceton Infinitv ETH6 with a crossover cable?
Is it possible to use a crossover cable to hook up my HTPC to the ETH6? My HTPC only has a wireless connection to my network and running cable to the router isn't possible. I would use the PCIe version, but it wouldn't install the drivers on my system (GeForce chipset is unsupported).

In theory this should work. It would esentally be the same as a PCIe 6 but external. You would have to assign a static IP to the ETH 6 on your regular DHCP network prior to plugging it directly into your PC. Then assign a static IP to your NIC in your PC. Making them in the same subnet of course. I think that's it?

Could you buy a cheap wired router to "manage" the infiniTV network? You could also probably set it up as a wireless bridge and then you wouldn't have to use the wireless card on the HTPC for internet access either.

That was going to be my other suggestion. A media bridge. Just make sure it has a gigabit switch.volfan6415 wrote:Could you buy a cheap wired router to "manage" the infiniTV network? I purchased a media bridge for a family member to use on a TiVo and TiVo Mini and it hasn't worked so well. I think the primary reason is the Wi-Fi signal between the bridge and the router isn't good. Even though the TiVo and the Mini are both plugged into the built in switch on the media bridge, the two devices constantly loose communication with each other. I can only assume that TiVo has some sort of ping to their servers that takes the link down.
So I would try the direct connection with static IP's first and then go to the bridge if it doesn't work.

If the ETH6 implements link-local (might be called auto ip or private address), it might just work to plug it in. In this case, both the Ethernet adapter and ETH6 would give up looking for a dhcp address and auto assign a 169.254... address. I've never tried this though with ETH6 but I know it can work with other devices.

I haven't personally tried it, but on the ETH there's still a toggle for "Default IP Settings (DHCP Server)" that may assign the 192.168.200.1 IP address, and probably something like 192.168.200.2 for the computer, like the PCIe versions do.

I had to try:).
Link-local didn't work. The Ethernet adapter was assigned a 169.254... address but it didn't see the ETH6. I think that either the ETH6 doesn't support 169.254... or that it didn't work because the Ethernet connection was public instead of home/private.
However, this worked...
I selected both the Ethernet and Wireless adapter, right clicked on one of them and selected "Bridge Connections" and then the ETH6 was reachable.

Wow, thanks for doing this . Did you need a crossover cable, or just a regular cable?Sea3 wrote:I had to try:).

Just a regular cable.
