Can I change the name of the Guide categories?
Anyone know how to change the names on the left side of this screenshot?
Or at least how to re-order them?
I have no kids.
And HDTV is a bit redundant these days.
Would rather have an "Old TV shows Channels" category instead of a "Movies".
etc.

It would also be neat if I could completely remove channels from some of the categories so I don't have to scroll through dozens of empty channels.
Is anyone else not able to create NEW favorites? It won't let me type anything into the box.

I don't know of a way to remove the dynamic categories, but you should be able to add your own "favorite lineup" using the second screen you show, I have no idea why you can't type in the field, it works fine for me.
Note that these existing built-in categories are dynamic based on the content of the channel, so if the channel has a movie on during that period (for the movie category) it will display that channel. The "favorite lineups" that you can create yourself are just simply a static list of channels.

I tried it about a minute ago and was able to type a name and save it.
I use EPG123 but I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with creating favorites.

I do use EPG123 and have added favorites since I started using it. I use a remote, however, so have never created one using the mouse & keyboard.

Thanks!
I'm also noticing that WMC keeps telling me the guide will be outdated in three days and asks if I want to update.
Of course, saying "yes" doesn't work.

I think you should look to find out why your guide is not updating.
The filter categories are fixed. You could maybe change the name by editing the dll for your language, but it won't change the filter. They will always be filtered by programs with the isMovies, isHdtv, isSports, isKids, isNews, and isSpecial flags.

Thank you. It was popping up that message because apparently it knows when your app is feeding it with guide data.
And I had missed a step to create a task for the guide data to update.
I've got that resolved now!

WMC only knows if channels are assigned to a guide lineup, and all of them have less than 3 days of listings, then you are about to run out (or have already run out) of guide data. It will then give that popup.
On the other hand, the EPG123 notification tray program will turn red as soon as it has been greater than 24 hours since the generation of the last mxf file imported into WMC.

I wasn't able to figure out how to remove all the Favorites options in Guide.
But, I did figure out how to remove ONE of them.
The option that shows your commonly used channels.
Go to registry here:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\ProgramGuide
Change these two settings:
fDisableAutoFavorites change from (0) to (1)
StickyFavorites change from (1) to (0)
Restart WMC and that listing should be gone now.

Just in case it means anything to some future software programmer... when my guide was out of date, all of the "favorites" went away.
Once I finished updating the guide, all the "favorites" came back.

Both of those registry settings can be set within WMC.
fDisableAutoFavorites => WMC/settings/General/Privacy/Privacy Settings/"Turn off the Most Viewed filter in the Guide"
StickyFavorites => WMC/settings/TV/Guide/Guide Page Options/"Remember the last selected favorite lineup"
As has been described above, the Category filtering is based on the guide content. No content, there won't be any categories to filter on. If there are no programs flagged as a movie, then there won't be a Movies category to filter on. If there are no programs flagged as HD, then no HDTV category. Same for all the other flags mentioned. The categories for program flags are fixed and constant... the only thing a user can do in that area is to create/add favorite channel lineups.
