XBox Phat speed vs Slim

I have a pool of XBox devices in my basement and have been using my XBox Slim for years. Works good. Then had this login issue and XBox started complaining it needed the Optional Media Update. Couldn't get past it. Finally found an XBox Phat in my basement that had the update on it and my profile was there and knock on wood it worked. Here's the odd part. This thing was fast. Loaded fast, pulled up Media Center fast, Live TV played instantly. Channel changes were way faster. Recorded shows played fast. Get the idea. Why would an older model XBox work faster like this than a "newer" model? Thoughts?
