Rollup broke Media Center Again

My solution will be to decommission WMC on win 8.1 and to give the latest .msi WMC package a try on a fresh install of windows 10. I thank the heroes of this thread for the tips and recommendations they have shared. KNS

I am fairly certain, unless something changed, that WMC CableCard with premium channels, such as HBO, is only possible up to Windows 10 1511 (we're at 21H2 now).

KNS - I have been running WMC on Win (1511!!! no later) on a 'miniPC' (actually two) and they run flawlessly. You need to lock out updates obviously but these machines are dedicated to WMC nothing else so there's little security risk, etc. Also, at the start I thought I could load Win8.1 Pro on these machines and run official WMC ,,,, however... no go... I could not find any suitable video drivers for Win 8 for these boxes which were designed long after win8 came out. I am sure you knew all this... if anyone has a way to insure you can find video drivers for Win8.1 on new machines let me know please... just curious.

I just took the plunge and installed the September 2022-09 updates on Windows 8. All appears to be well. I jumped straight from June to September skipping the two bad months.

October security rollup success. no issues w WMC.

Also... just 2 months until WIN7 is dead. cable card + WMC / MC7 has been great. Still use and enjoy this old POS since day 1 in 2004 (XP MCE). Ubisoft ended WIN7 support in June. Steam support, chromium support for win7 also ends in Jan. End of an era. Win 8 WMC, the red headed step child now sorta looks appealing... ok not really.

The total toxic debt back in 2007''s 'too big to fail' crisis was only 700 Billion. Competition for shrinking consumer dollars will be fierce as we enter this never before seen cycle.

Ahem... sorry, a bit off topic there. So with OTT, sure, content is king but only to harvest end user data that is to be further weaponized against us all. Yay! GL all.

Yeah, the October Cumulative Update appears to be fine, it contains the same ehtrace.dll 6.3.9600.20565 dated 11-Aug-2022 which was added in the September update.

Only three more updates to go. If you want to stop the nags about support ending you can add the following registry entry.

While I know Win7 is EOL and Win8 is soon to be, I'm concerned and confused a bit by your post.

I run Win7 x64 with two ceton infinitv 6 pcie cable cards. In two months you are saying it will stop working? I didnt think that was the case.... I know cablecards are being phased out since they arent required to be offered by the FCC... but not sure why everything will stop working when I use EPG123 and control my ESP windows updates.... let me know if you know differently.

Windows 7 won't stop working in two months, it just won't continue to receive Extended Security Updates (ESU) after that date.

P.S. The rumor is that Microsoft may still continue the ESU program.

The Windows 7 x64 Rollup KB5020000 didn't have any adverse effects on WMC, and I haven't had any other problems (that I know about) so far.

Seems fine on Windows 8. I always download the file list now and give it a quick once over. It comes as a CSV so can be easily sorted and filtered. This is good for spotting changes to Media Center files, but doesn't rule out MS breaking some other critical component.

Windows Update broke WMC (no Tuners found).
I had just installed: 2022-12 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5021294)
My tuner (HDHomeRun PRIME) no longer shows up in Network.
I can see my HDHomeRun PRIME in Control Panel (Devices and Printers) but it is greyed out with Status: Not Connected.

I backed out KB5021294 and WMC works again.

I have the same tuner AVermedia A188C in addition to a HDHomeRun HDHR4-2US. Mine has been rock solid through Nov and now Dec Windows Rollups on Windows 8.1.

Thanks jerryrigit, my tuner on this computer had been perfect for nearly a year (except for the earlier Windows Rollup that this thread is about) which is what lead me to suspect the Nov updates. Since no one who installed the Nov updates is having any problem, it's probably something else so I've reinstalled the AVermedia drivers to see if that was the problem.
