Fingers-crossed that gets through to the correct team. All support routes direct you to the Feedback Hub which doesn’t exist on Windows 8. I am not sure what Microsoft expect you to do. At this point Windows 7 is unsupported unless you have an ESU contract.pimjoosten wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 9:55 am I have just reported this issue via the Windows 10 feedback hub. Should have done that earlier, but I did not have the opportunity until now. It is a shame that MS did not correct this in the August update. I have now explicitly requested this to be corrected in the September update. Let's hope they take Win7/8.1 feedback via the Win10 Feedback hub seriously.

Not to get too far off the subject, but does Recorded TV HD use the same ehtrace.dll as the original version of WMC, or is this a possible way of getting around the problems (caused by Windows Update) listed in this thread.

Unfortunately not. RTVHD doesn’t modify or replace any core Media Center files, its a plugin which uses the extensibility framework.

I think you can edit your own posts for a certain amount of time after you post it, but then it's locked.
I'm not sure why this is, but one reason I can think of is that if your post has responses and then you modify the original post to say something completely different it may give the wrong impression...
Example:
OP: Who loves puppies???
RESP1: I do!
RESP2: I love them!!!
Then the original poster comes back 2 weeks later and edits the OP to read:
OP: Who loves blinking text and wants to petition browser developers to bring it back?
You see how that can cause issues?
Not that I think stuff like that would happen here, but just giving one reason why it may be a thing in the first place...
EDIT: Just as a confirmation that you CAN edit your posts after you post it, here is this edit... Not sure how long after your initial post it allows it though...

SUCCESS, at least so far. I just installed the Sept Rollup for Windows 7 x64 (KB5017361) which replaces the ehtrace.dll with version 6.1.7601.26112 and WMC has correctly started a recording (no crashes), so fingers crossed the problem with Media Center is now fixed.

Hopefully good news: there is a new version of ehtrace.dll in KB5017361 (Windows 7 September cumulative update). The version is 6.1.7601.26112 dated 11-8-2022. I have yet to test it, but at least there is a change, unlike August.

The Windows 8 September update contains ehtrace.dll 6.3.9600.20565 dated 11-Aug-2022. Are folks finding that this fixes the previous problems? The KB makes no mention of Media Center.

I can't speak for Windows 8, but the Sept Update for Windows 7 has allowed WMC to complete a scheduled recording, and a successful EPG123 update without problems. So barring any unforeseen developments, I believe Media Center is now fully functional again. There was no mention of WMC being 'fixed' in the notes for the Windows 7 Update either, but Bertmace has indicated that his Windows 8 installation is now working so I believe this was fixed for Windows 8 as well.

Yeah - we unfortunately had an issue some time ago when a member decided to edit all of his previous posts after having a disagreement with a moderator!mustpushbuttons wrote:Just me or is it creepy AF one cannot edit or delete one's own posts? forum content worth that much to TGB? He basically replaced each post with a single word if memory serves...
This made a real mess of several threads and setting a time limit for editing seemed to be a reasonable workaround.
You can always ask a member of the team to edit specific posts after the time limit if required.

I just took the plunge and installed the September 2022-09 updates on Windows 8. All appears to be well. I jumped straight from June to September skipping the two bad months.

Thanks for reporting on the results of installing KB5017367 on 8.1 with WMC. My 64bit 8.1 pro with WMC also lists one other important security update KB 5012170 released 2022-08 and an optional .NET framework update KB 5017531 released 2022-09. Does anyone have experience with installing either or both of these impacting WMC? Thanks in advance. KNS

No impact for me. I installed all available updates and my Windows Media Center works fine on Windows 8.1 pro x64 using CableCard (HDHomeRun).kns wrote: ↑Tue Sep 20, 2022 7:47 pm Thanks for reporting on the results of installing KB5017367 on 8.1 with WMC. Following reports of no impact on WMC from the September updates to Win 8.1 I decided to give it a try. After being burned by the August updates and having to repair WMC the hard way without benefit of a recent image or restore point, I created both before proceeding. I can confirm the reports of no apparent impact on WMC from the September WU offerings for my machine, HOWEVER... ...other functions were broken. There was a popup reporting failure of tray icons and WU displayed a new servicing stack update but refused to run again saying that, even though I was using an administrator account, I had to get administrator permission. Not wanting to find later surprises I reverted to the restore point. When that didn't fix the observed problems I restored the system image. That fixed the observed problems but deleted WU history. I believe that the moral of this story is that YMMV because no two machines are the same and that as they reach end-of-life as defined by microsoft the accumulation of file corruption, etc exact a toll. My solution will be to decommission WMC on win 8.1 and to give the latest .msi WMC package a try on a fresh install of windows 10. I thank the heroes of this thread for the tips and recommendations they have shared.

PS - Because companies are replacing older Win 10 machines with new ones running Win 11, those used machines are showing up on various websites at very attractive prices. My 'new' Win 10 platform was acquired as "Amazon Renewed" for ~$150. A powerful machine but with a definite Windows retirement date. WMC on Ubuntu anyone?
