I would much prefer support for a network tuner, but I'm really surprised (partnership aside) it's not just a Microsoft-only adapter. If it could record as well, the One would be well on its way to being what they wanted, the only thing you need; at least for cord cutters like me. I see this as a good first step.

They will be selling a rebranded XBOX/Microsoft version in the future, that looks like the Europe TV tuner. You will always be able to use both the Hauppage and the Xbox branded one (seeing as they will be the same).

And like you say, the tuner support is the first step, the DVR support can come in a later update :D (but still, XBOX would need to be cheaper, plus offer some sort of whole home support before I switch)

The article said it could stream the channels using the xbox glass app. So as long as you had a device that supports the app you have the whole home setup.

I just think this is really cool news. A step in the right direction. I wonder what would happen if you plugged your cable into it? ClearQAM channels maybe?

I don't understand this step backwards.....

Microsoft needs to stop thinking "what could we do next", and look at what they already have.

This is seriously a step backwards.

I found an Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 955Q on sale in Raleigh for $59. Picked it up. I tried plugging it into the XBOX and it said "TV Tuner found" but that was as far as I got. Going to play some more tomorrow. Will let you know what I find out. If I can get the antenna working with OTA, i'll try plugging the cablevision into the same tuner and see if it can pick up cable channels.

I'm just happy that Microsoft is recognizing that OTA is not a bad thing.

Need to be in the preview program for now, it should be rolled out soon with these announcements "At the moment, this is only available to people in the Xbox One preview program, so expect this feature to roll out to all owners soon."

Yeah, it wasn't clear to me that it was the preview program. Does anyone know if it a) has been released to the masses or b) how do I get into the preview program?

Forgive me, but I don't understand how this would be a whole house setup? To me, my whole house set up is 6 TV locations with cat6 where I receive cable TV including HBO, have access to the WMC HTPC which has recorded TV and Movies, Music library, family photos and videos using Xbox 360 Extenders.

How would streaming channels work? This is really a huge step backwards, right?

Best Wishes

Adding OTA capability only gives them the privilege to add live tv as a bullet point. I can't imagine that a significant number of users will take advantage of it, much less rely on it as a useable feature. It's hard to say if it's a step back as much as it's a snapshot of the past...Any live tv on xbone is an advancement.

If they are I look forward to seeing them make a right royal mashup of things as only Microsoft could.

The 'official' Xbox OTA tuner is now here. It's just a repackage of the Hauppage tuner with an Xbox logo (not even) thrown on basically.

I have one of those tuners and I used to use it on a laptop before the cable company scrambled basic channels.

one thing that I noticed is that when it is running it gets hot.

MS loves going backwards... Instead of HDMI-CEC, we get IR blasters. And instead of cablecard tuner support (because like 99% of cable providers require a cable box, or cablecard to decrypt their content), we get OTA tuners.. so we can watch the 3 Spanish channels that come in. Instead of a DVR (WMC), we get a few apps that suck.
