News update: Steve Ballmer retiring soon
Just read that the ceo of Microsoft is retiring... given the direction Microsoft has been going, I think this may be a good thing. Maybe someone will revive Windows media center after all?

You aren't the only one. Look at Microsoft's stock. The announcement came last night, and today MSFT opened over 8% higher than yesterday's close. Coincidence? I think not.makryger wrote:I think this may be a good thing.
I'd hate to be Ballmer right now. Of course, he probably hasn't even put two and two together yet.

Why would you hate to be him? It doesn't matter if people don't like him. He's set for life. And his kids lives, probably.

Liking him has nothing to do with it. Investors just told Steve Ballmer "Microsoft is more valuable without you." He may have a lot of money, but the money means much less in light of the investors' reactions.

I imagine the market reaction didn't come as too much of a surprise to him - people in his position don't usually worry about what other people think of them.

With the amount of Microsoft stock he owns, he welcomes it.

I guess I've just never been employed in a position where I don't value the opinions of others as those opinions relate to my job performance. I pride myself on my ability to effectively perform above and beyond my duties. I certainly wouldn't appreciate it if I turned in my resignation and everyone celebrated the fact that I was leaving. I don't care how much money you give me, nothing makes such a kick in the pants any better.

If Ballmer was surprised by the markets reaction, he should never have been in the job in the first place. He hasn't been flavor of the month for a very long time, and morning after reactions by the market are pretty meaningless in the big scheme of things - the stock ended the day lower than it was a month or two ago.
See what the stock is like 2 months after he actually goes and see what the market really thinks.

Whenever someone says "Ballmer" - the only thing that I ever think of is that clip of him jumping around the stage like an idiot, sweating like a wh__e in church on Sunday, repeating "Developers" over and over. I've been in my share of awkward staff meetings, but that one was pretty bad.
I think this is good for MSFT.
