Windows 10 Upgrade Still Available

#1

Post by STC » Mon Aug 01, 2016 6:39 pm

It was pretty much a cert that MS would keep the upgrade going as a freebie past the deadline yesterday. It's now available in disguise (aimed at assistive tech users), but works for any upgrade path without assistive tech.

The upgrade to 10 is still very much accessible and will most probably never expire:

Since the anniversary patch, using the new Win10 image, you can now perform a clean install of 10 using a 7/8.x key.
For those keeping the older OS running, no need to backup, upgrade, backup, restore.

Just to confirm, I just loaded it. Windows 7 Pro -> Windows 10 Pro, no fuss, no muss. Nice tip!

Top banana ;)

MS have done it deliberately, but no mention of it anywhere.
Looking the other way and whistling no doubt. Trying to beef up the slow uptake I think.

I can tell them a simple way to get a good bit more people to accept the upgrade. I'll give you 2 guesses. :D

It would seem that although Microsoft have said the free upgrade offer is over they haven't actually closed it down.

You can still install and activate the latest build with a Windows 7 or 8 key without needing to visit the assistive technology page.

I suspect an upgrade to Windows 10 will remain free as long as it suits Microsoft's agenda.

I did this months ago with an Acer Revo long before they "expired" the upgrade.

That's interesting as I hadn't tried clean install with key that way until it was documented that you could do so recently.

Did yo have to install without key initially?

I used the product key that is plastered on the Revo at whatever point it was asked of me. I made a bootable USB via the Windows 10 USB tool and chose clean install or something along those lines. I tried to upgrade the Revo multiple times but it never succeeded which drove me to try other options.

Doh! Must remember to read whole thread rather than just the first post.

When you have grossly missed your installation target number you don't get stupid and take away the only reason some would have for installing Windows 10.

This was what I was attempting to portray, although I could have described my thoughts better and apologize for any misunderstanding...

MS are desperate to get the users.
