I poked in at AVS forums, and it turns out the ReplayTV people got wind of this beginning 7/10:

My guess is that the Rovi situation wasn't at MS's instigation. Something happened at Tribune. The timing is just too coincidental.
That put MS in a whole new light, in my opinion. They knew this was coming and took active steps to address it. This isn't MS trying to kill WMC, IMHO.

I thought Replay TV shut down their guide data mothership years ago? Unless everyone is using WiRNS?

No, they said they were going to--and ended up not.
But before they cancelled those plans, people set up alternatives that used WiRNS and a third party pay system. Those became optional, until last week and until Replay fixes this issue.
My guess is, Replay got caught by surprise while MS didn't. Like I said, this puts MS and WMC in a whole new light. I'd shy away from the whole "MS is dumping WMC" talk track.

Except with WMC, where it's clearly not happening.

I think the only reason we are getting guide updates moved over to Rovi is because of the XBOX ONE, which Microsoft is betting to become the WMC replacement.
