Library Time Machine

Have you ever wondered about changes over time to your Movie, TV Show, or Music library? I've given it a thought or two over the years and so did Rickt1962.

That conversation triggered my OCD and turned into a little utility I call "Library Time Machine". I couldn't stop at the "simple" version. I had to keep working on it until I was satisfied. At this point I'm done. My eyes are crossed and I think I can finally sleep. :wtf:

If you're interested in trying this out, you'll be playing the long game. It all starts with the snapshot you take when you first unzip it. Then you'll take another snapshot six days (weeks, months, years) from now to compare to your original snapshot.

I have both 32 and 64 bit versions available for download here.

Installation instructions:
Open the zip file and drag/extract the "Library Time Machine" folder to anywhere on your system (it's fully self contained). Then open that folder and run the "Library Time Machine.exe" file. It has a built in help system that I hope answers any questions.

Good Night!

Rickt1962. You can extract the "Library Time Machine.exe" to your old "Directory Compare" folder and start using it. It's fully backward compatible with your previous snapshots.

Update...

I've been working on this for the last few months and it's amazing how efficient it is. Today I created both movie and TV show snapshots and then compared them to some snapshots I created in June 2017. It found a "net" change of ~600 movies and ~95 TV shows in those libraries over ~2.5 years.

The entire process only took six minutes. The majority of that time was spent looking at the additions and removals from the libraries.

Code: Select all

12/14/2019 09:38 Library Time Machine opened
12/14/2019 09:38 Movie snapshot (Movies 2019.12.14.09.38.24.txt) created
12/14/2019 09:38 TV Show snapshot (TV Shows 2019.12.14.09.38.38.txt) created
12/14/2019 09:38 File 1 (Movies 2017.06.30.00.00.00.txt) selected for analysis
12/14/2019 09:39 File 2 (Movies 2019.12.14.09.38.24.txt) selected for analysis
12/14/2019 09:39 WinMerge opened (Movies 2017.06.30.00.00.00.txt) and (Movies 2019.12.14.09.38.24.txt)
12/14/2019 09:42 WinMerge closed
12/14/2019 09:42 File 1 (TV Shows 2017.06.30.00.00.00.txt) selected for analysis
12/14/2019 09:42 File 2 (TV Shows 2019.12.14.09.38.38.txt) selected for analysis
12/14/2019 09:42 WinMerge opened (TV Shows 2017.06.30.00.00.00.txt) and (TV Shows 2019.12.14.09.38.38.txt)
12/14/2019 09:44 WinMerge closed
12/14/2019 09:44 Library Time Machine closed
For anyone interested, I've started consolidating my "TGB inspired" utilities (including my EPG123 utilities) at this location -> https://mega.nz/#F!2k0WXI5b!hEvTsif-W8oOfIcDeQNCLA

I've been writing custom utilities that bridge the gap between disparate systems, or fill in a need where nothing exists, or what's available is so bloated it's ridiculous, since the mid 1990s. They've traditionally been written for my personal use or for the company's I've worked for.

This is something I really enjoy doing, so if there's something you've needed but can't find a solution for (and it's within my wheelhouse AND interests me) let me know.

Minor update... Fixed a rare buffer overflow error and a few minor (to me) annoyances.

The update's located in the Library Time Machine Version 1.3 folder.

There are two files and a folder in the zip files. If you're already using it and have it on your system, the only thing you need to do is extract the "Library Time Machine.exe" and overwrite your existing one.

New users -> Drag the "Library Time Machine" folder to a location of your choosing.

To uninstall or remove... Delete the folder. ;)
