I just got a message from comcast telling me that comcast has increased the speeds of their High speed internet service, and to take full advantage of those speeds, I "need" to replace my current modem with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. My speed was 25/5... they've upped it to 50/5. Despite the fact that even 25/5 was overkill for me. So now they want me to spend $80 on a docsis 3.0 modem? No thank you. Especially since docsis 2.0 can handle up to 40/10 on it's own. Now the question is- if I unplug/plug back in my current modem... will it no longer be supported?

Your current modem should work just fine. Comcast is correct that in order to take advantage of the 50 Mbps download speed, a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is required, but there's nothing that says you must use a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. A DOCSIS 2.0 modem will work, it'll just be restricted to about 38 Mbps.

Right, from a technical strandpoint, it should work fine. But comcast can just say they won't keep it activated and take it off my account, since it is no longer officially supported.

anyways, I did end up trying to reset it and see what speeds I got- now I am up to 31 download, and 10 upload. (on wireless laptop). Yikes, thats too fast for me! I'd almost want to downgrade if I weren't getting a promotional rate.
